Sleeping Through The Night

Hello again!

We have had our racer over 2 weeks now, and are experiencing some difficulties sleeping. Our hound sleeps in the bedrooms with us with his crate open (he chewed through it one of the first days we got him) and with his dog bed by our heads. At about midnight, he barks once while hes standing up (for the life of me, i cant figure out what hes barking at). We sometimes ignore it and sometimes say stop. From then on he paces, stands up, moves around which wakes us up about once an hour. We are going to introduce a bed time snack to see if that helps. We have the blinds halfway open right now because he typically wrestled with them to try and see during his waking, and we hate the noise. This problem isnt new, but its definitely wearing on us. If you have any suggestions we would love to hear them.

He's adjusting to his new surroundings. It's very much like having a newborn baby. A bedtime routine is important. Here we do a final turn-out at about 11 p.m. and Lola gets a cookie or two. She has a bed in our room and one in the living room to choose from apart from the couch she has claimed for herself. . She detested her crate! It took her a good while to settle into the routine.

 

Night lights work for some folks. DAP diffusers/collars might be helpful to calm his anxiety. A visit to the vet to make sure there are no medical issues might be in order.

 

Patience, patience and more patience, He's never lived in a home without his kennel mates. Imagine how you would feel if you were suddenly thrust into a whole different environment, no matter how comfortable, with no understanding of what was going on. You'd pace and call out, too.

Try draping a child's cot blanket over him. I think it comforts them, keeps them warmer, and they sleep more soundly.

As Peggy got older she needed the blanket more and also a night light.
