Poor Little Milo

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone.

I just thought I would post my hell of a week. I dont require sympathy. Just chatting with some fellow greyhound lovers. Weve had one of those horrid weeks, one thing after another. First the death of a family member and then the diagnosis of stage 3 lung cancer in another.

Then the finally top things off. I work nights. I was at work when I got the call this morning at 7.20am. I was shortly due to finish. My husband in a panic. One of the dogs has gone. Since he had the two children and I wasnt yet home he couldnt go out looking for him. This is a dog who is very timid, wont go to anyone else. He loves us and trusts us dearly. He is soon 10yrs old. When my husband posted on Facebook for some help from anyone who may have seen him, there it was a black Lurcher has been knocked down in the village by a car. It was so davastating. Apparently the impact was so bad the car slung hun across the entire road in the air until he landed on the verge. He got up and ran covered in all sorts of nasty deep cuts and wounds. He was then found by a man who took him to our local vet who rang me about an hour later whilst we were out searching high and low for him. I suspected the worst and when she said those words I need you to come in ASAP as you have some decision to make i couldnt breathe. I was running on coffee and zero sleep and my adrenaline was pumping hard. Not another black Lurcher of ours killed by the road I thought. We got to the vets and he was full of meds and antibiotics and cuts so deep all over, the vet said it looks like hes been shot not like a RTA. Theyve stitched him up and hes survived. I have no idea how. There is a God! The woman who witnessed came to see us and said she would be surprised if hadnt broken something or gotten internal injuries. She said I should ring the vet and ask for x rays or scans. I did this and they said it was unnecessary. Hes now on his way home, OH is collecting him. I cannot wait to cuddle him and kiss him. But I am so worried, what if its done more damage that we cant see. How can the vets be so sure?

So thats my week in a nutshell. I am ready to drink a very large glass of red wine. And I am going to treat milo to a lovely feast as soon as hes well enough to eat normally.

Wow. Not what you needed after the week you had already and working all night. Glad to hear that it sounds like Milo will recover. I'm a little surprised at the decision not to x-ray, but will assume they know what they are doing. Hope that Milo is back to his old self soon.

It turns out they x-rayed in the end. Every body part in fact. Hes as fit as a fiddle with no internal damage but has a fracture to his pelvis. They want to keep him in tonight on a drip as hes in a lot of pain. And talk to a specialist tomorrow to see where we go from here.

I wondered how they could be sure without the x-ray, but also figured if they did any they may not have been read yet. Hope he is feeling better soon.

He might need surgery for the pelvic break, but he's a lucky dog if that's the extent of his serious injuries!

Good luck to him and to you! Breathe!

he sounds like my deceased father- at 89 fell broke some ribs, healed. at 92 fell broke his pelvic and more ribs- that guy was once a carpenter carried doors and beams on his back. he was also hit by a car in his late 50s, technically retired- stopped carrying heavy doors and doing framing but worked at trade shows until his late 70s. once an athlete, always an athlete. speedy healing and many more lives for the miraculous milo!

Thank you.

Vet just rang. She wants ideally to keep him in. However he wont eat for them. She thinks hes a bit down and would be better to come home as she feels he may eat. She said they have all fallen for him, hes been such a lovely dog especially after all hes been through. She said hes coughing but they have checked him over and there is no fluid on his lungs so she thinks its bruising. However she wants me to come and assess whether or not to take him home or not as she said he looks terrible, in a very bad way and it may make the kids frightened. So Im going down at 4pm with the boys to see him xx

Maybe take some food with you and see if he'll eat from your hand?

Thank you Ellen. I did just that. And he took it and scoffed it up immediately. The vet then said yep I think he needs to be home with you, as much as Id rather keep him in, I think he will actually progress at home better. So home sweet home he is. Hes sedated a bit and very calm and content right now. He was so glad to see his bed bless him. Im so happy to have my baby boy home (well, old man). Hes cost us an absolute fortune but my god hes worth every penny. Xxxx

I'm so glad he's home and know you are too. I hope he continues to eat well and makes a full recovery under your loving care. Milo :kiss2:getwell

  • 2 weeks later...

He is getting much better thank you. He currently has a lump of fluid on his spinal area where there were lots of deep wounds. But this should go soon. He is still on antibiotics and metacam but he has made such a great speedy recovery. We just cant believe it. The vet said she isnt sure how he is even alive, never mind the fact he even got away with no broken bones or internal damage. Miracle!

Xxx
