Newgreymom
Has anyone had a grey or other breed on Prilosec for long term? I worry about side effects if taken for extended periods of time. She takes it for GERD due to hiatal hernia which was diagnosed UW Madison. I didnt ask the Internist when we were there.
oldrunners
My Penny recently suffered a severe gastric upset. (The vet commented "That's one pissed off gut!"). After several days of rx food, she has been on Prilosec daily for not quite 8 weeks. The only side effect is she is eating enthusiastically once again. She will be on it for the rest of her life. Sadly, she has also recently been diagnosed with DCM, which is life-limiting. I realize 8 weeks isn't much of a long term, but, hopefully this will add to your toolbox of info. oldrunners
BTW, it comes in capsule and tablet form. I've found the much smaller tablet is easier to hide in whatever the pill camo of the day is. Also, I get it at BJs. It comes in a package of 3 two week courses. Newgreymom
Thanks for all the help. They say for humans it can cause osteoporosis, kidney issues....I just worry
cleptogrey
i've been on it for years. i was concerned about the side effects, the dr. said,"take calcium supplements". unfortunately dogs don't live long enough to have osteoporosis from it. as to the kidneys- too many drugs which will improve their quality of life may compromise the kidneys. i go for quality of life- my dog ended up w/ lyme/anaplas and that did his kidneys in. may as well keep them comfortable. but that's my opinion.
