MDBeland
Marty has been licking his feet and they are becoming dry with some hair loss and dry skin around the paws. Our vet started him on Claritin she also mentioned an anti-itch spray or cream. Zymox with 0.5% hydrocortisone? I looked this up and is rather pricey for my taste. Is there a "human" equivalent OTC that can be used in place of the pricey "pet store" version? What treatments do others usually use for greyhounds with seasonal allergies and paw licking? KF_in_Georgia
Stay off the grass as much as possible, and wipe or wash the dog's feet when you come back in the house. Some people have the dog walk through a pail of water. Quote Kathy and Q (CRT Qadeer from Fuzzy's Cannon and CRT Bonnie) and Jane (WW's Aunt Jane from Trent Lee and Aunt M); photos to come. racindog
Drs. Foster & Smith have a 'Itch Stop' lotion that works geat on feet that is 0.5% hydrocortizone. They also have spray Itch Stop. Best thing was something called Resicort that I don't think is available anymore but there is a clone on the market. Rocket (on here) clued me into how well the Springtime Skin & Coat Oil work. I also use their Spirulina tabs. I also give colostrum and during bad parts of the year will bath them once a week. Dr. Foster & Smith also makes very nice Itch Stop shampoo & creme rinse. And you probably need to wash/wipe the paws off when they come in. This keeps things under control and I don't have to use any drugs then that some of which have been shown to be harmful. cleptogrey
I used to use human grade aloe and hydrocortisone(my vet's recommendation) . Very cheap at Costco. Plain water rinse seemed to be the best solution of all.
sobesmom
I just used regular generic Benadryl pills and it completely fixed my Sobe's fall allergy issues of his feet getting itchy. Simple, cheap. And it worked. The benadryl stopped the chewing and licking, which kept the feet from getting dry and torn up. MDBeland
The diagnosed is allergies caused by ragweed. She prescribed Singulair, Claritin to be taken together once a day. Marty will be getting a bath once a week and getting paws rinsed after every walk. Edited September 19, 2018 by MDBeland
