Guest Amathis
Hello everyone! I am getting a greyhound on Sunday and have started looking into the medicines that I would need. I live in Cincinnati, so I probably will need tick and flea medicine year round? I have also been hoping to find some inexpensive medication, as I am on a budget. Any thoughts? Thanks! Hubcitypam
Big fan of Bravecto here. It seems expensive but lasts three months bringing it down to the same price as Advantix and Frontline...which many fleas have become immune to. If ordered from AU it is around $30. If things are really tough you can use Adams Flea and Tick Spray. Wonder if you need year around in Ohio. If there is snow on the ground and you've the Adams spay on upholstered furniture it seems like you might be able skate a few months. cleptogrey
Seresto collars are great. greyhounds and galgos tolerate them much better than whippets. they are good for 8 months
racindog
Be sure and check the reported adverse reactions/deaths for whatever you chose. Most of them are far far from innocuous. I work a SAR K9 in the woods -tick central-but the only synthetic chemical I will use is the Preventic collar because it is the only one who has an efficacy vs. adverse reaction ratio acceptable to me; and as an added bonus I prefer the fact that with the Preventic's amitraze the tick does NOT have to bite them first for it to kill the tick. Be aware though that it is contraindicated for use with a dog getting Tramadol as it is an MOI inhibitor or something. I also use the Adams spray(NOT spot on!) and some natural things like diatomaceous earth as well. I have found SPRINGTIME garlic granules to be safe and highly effective as well. Many people will flame you and make fun of you if you use garlic but they are the ones who bought cheap garlic from their big box stores and they got what they paid for. Springtimes garlic is significantly costlier than the cheap stuff(having a much higher quality-allicitin content) but it works very well on all my dogs and is safe. I have used it on many greyhounds. Batmom
The natural stuff -- garlic, etc. -- doesn't work. It's even been studied (by real scientists, not the seller). It doesn't work. Please, out of respect for yourself, your pets, and your fellow dog owners, use Nexguard, Bravecto, or one of the Seresto collars. They work. Here in northern IL, we do year round. Guest rdrewke
Hi, all. We have a beautiful grey named Minnie (after Minnie the Moocher), and she has done reasonable well on FRONTLINE Plus-- fleas not an issue here in Northern NJ, with very little contact with other dogs, but ticks being the real terror. Lately it seems as if maybe Frontline is not as good as it used to be, or the ticks are developing resistance to it? I wonder how many of us have had good results with Seresto collars, and how many have had problems with them? We are trying Nexguard but not such a big fan about the ticks having to bite before they get killed off. Thoughts? ---Thanks. seeh2o
First of all, welcome and congratulations! I use a Seresto collar on Bowie. Works really well. Seems pricey, but lasts for a long time. I think it's supposed to last 8 months, I've read differing experiences by users. No complaints here. I like it because Bowie's oncologist thought it was the best thing for her, she wore it throughout her chemo last summer without a problem. If she had had a problem I could just pull it off of her. KellyandKris216
I've used Seresto on our two pups and two cats for the last several years and never had a problem. I can only remember one tick I've found during that time and it was already dead! It really works, and I love that I don't have to worry about touching the oil slick of Frontline for a few days after application.
cleptogrey
also, bayer is excellent re: problems. my greyhound, who is not in the best of health is doing beautifully w/ the Seresto. My whippet started loosing hair at the site of the collar. I called them, excellent support and a quick refund once the receipt was received. Bathing the dog in the original dawn dish detergent removes the chemical from the skin. I did find out that the way the collar works is the chemical that is dispensed will give fleas and ticks a sensation of a small electrical current. So basically they are being shocked by the chemical. On some dogs, who may be more sensitive they too will feel this sensation. Some dogs will scratch more than others producing hair loss, some dogs can have other reactions. Customer service was really informative. At one point i tried frontline Gold- since the plus was not that effective. DON'T- skin burns on both greyhounds. Also, Merial has the longest wait for customer service! I did have both Felix's and Annie's adverse reaction recorded by Merial, it goes on record to the FDA.

Batmom
Sounds like several Seresto users have answered . I haven't tried it here but as you can see, many folks use it and are happy with it. We use Nexguard. It's been great in our environment but as you note, Seresto or something else might be better when there are a LOT of ticks around.
