Guest M4ckems1
Hi this is my first post In January we took on a 7 month greyhound who should have been a racer but was dumped by trainer. We have been trying to house train, and had reasonable success but night times seem to be a problem. She is walked 3 times a day, and has a late evening trott around village about 8pm then let out into garden at 10pm for last toilets. I get up at 5.40 and Izzy probs has already weed around 40% of the time in the same spot in the kitchen. We have been washing the floor with biological washing powder. We have crated her the last two night and she wees in that and sleeps around it. We have checked her at Vets for UTI and that was all clear. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance. greysmom
She's still a puppy so her toilet training is going to be more prolonged than a retired racer (even one who's still a puppy!). First, she's been checked for a UTI but did the vet say anything about other physical abnormalities like a hooded vulva? Her bladder will still be a little small too, so she won't be able to hold it as long - though a healthy dog *should* be able to sleep through the night by 8 or 10 months old. You might take her back and see about an ultrasound of her bladder/kidneys to make sure there's nothing going on if she's physically fit. Second, if she's not sleeping in your bedroom, she should be, so you can hear when she begins to get restless. Many people will use a long line or leash and attached it to their wrist or foot so the dog can't leave the room without them knowing. If you can determine *when* she needs to go you can schedule yourself to get up and take her out before so it breaks the cycle of going in the house. If you can get her scheduled for those early morning trips, you can also gradually move the time back so she will eventually be sleeping through until you get up. Third, more exercise. She's still a puppy. A tired dog will be more inclined to sleep all night and won't need to get up. You might also consider taking up her water after 8 pm, but I hate that solution. A dog should always have access to fresh water, IMO. Unless you use the crate regularly, just sticking her in there all of a sudden probably won't solve the issue. Plus, puppy. Good luck!
