Difficult Situation - Any Way Out?

Recommended Posts

Aww, so great to hear! Percy still doesn't really play much. He'll play every now and then for about 20 seconds. Sometimes in the morning he runs up and down the all (at around 6am, which is too early!) and then settle back to bed until I get up. Every now and then he'll toss a toy around, but it's very short-lived.

I will gently point out that rules need to be followed! :rules Can we get a picture of your girl, and a name? Although it has gotten to be a lot harder to add pictures since photo bucket changed their policy! (any advice on that is appreciated!)

You are doing a great job! Your story reminds me so much of greytalker Greg1229 and his spook of spooks, Lil Bit, and she came around. Hang in there, it is so worth it!

Thanks and thanks to you all who offer little snippets. We read and appreciate every post.

Our hound is named Loose. I don't use any photo hosting sites (I used to use PhotoShelter too) and I can't seem to upload directly onto here. So can I paint you a mental picture for now? Think, "magnificent, gorgeous brindle who's trying really hard to get on with her humans" and you won't go far wrong.

Thank you - that's our plan!

Our vet has started Loose on Prozac which she's been on a few days. She's going through the "Prozac-induced increased agitation" phase at the moment, poor thing, but we're going to persevere - this was expected and we are sure that it will be relatively short-lived and she'll benefit in the long-term.

We've had to concede to the inevitable.

Earlier in the week, we had to let Loose go back to the kennels from where we adopted her.

We tried, we really did.

It was too distressing for her to be indoors around me (and I work from home so I'm there all the time) and outdoors unless Mrs WabiSabi was there too. Even then, a car revving outside, or me exhaling too loudly would send her scurrying for cover.

We are heartbroken. We truly believe that Loose tried harder to accommodate us than we did her but she couldn't bring herself to completely accept us. She's not a house dog and we already know that when she saw her previous kennel keeper, she trotted off towards her.

We are taking some time out but will be dipping our toes in the greyhound waters again in the future. Thank you all for your time and trouble. You're a great bunch and your hounds are lucky to have you as their property.

x

I commend you and Mrs WabiSabi for going above and beyond for Loose. I know there's a greyhound match for you out there!

It's a hard decision and no one should make you feel less for it. It might help if you can consider yourselves her first foster home, getting her ready for a permanent placement in a situation where everyone can be happy and healthy. Now the adoption agency has a lot more information about her to make her next placement a permanent one. And you have a better idea of how you need a greyhound to fit in your lives.

Not every dog is a great fit for every home, but I know there's a really great dog out there for you!

Depending on what kennels she came from they might well decide to let her live there permanently if she found it too hard to relax in a home environment, in which case you have helped them to give her the life she needs. Hopefully you will feel you can try again soon with another houndie and she will have helped you with any minor problems you may encounter.

I'm so sorry it didn't work out with you, but of one thing you can be certain: you went that extra mile and three.

It is rare indeed that spookiness is intractable to the extent which you found, and I don't think and adoption group would normally have let a dog like that go without assessing the new owners knowledge of Greyhounds to deal with it. It may have been due to an incident in the dog's very early puppy socialisation phase.

Do try again soon. One of mine turned out to be an instant heart dog; adopted at 4yrs old she was one of those 'leaners' that loved human attention.

You put more effort into trying with her than most people would have. As they say on the fearful dog list: It's ok to realize you want a pet, not a project. I spent 7 years dealing with a very fearful dog, and five of those years dealing with a "slightly timid" dog. And I now have have a happy outgoing puppy, and am realizing how different it is to deal with a truly happy dog! Don't beat yourself up, and look for a more balanced dog. You will make a good owner for the right dog.

Don't feel bad. You did your best. I was heartbroken when I had to take Dangit back. The only thing I feel okay about is that he was never allowed to grab the cat. It took years, more than three years to get the yorkie to come out of hiding and quit biting guests. Now he is the greatest little dog ever. We never gave him meds. We always had several dogs and he just faded into the back ground. He loved food though, treats and eventually came out on his own. I think that kind of dog does well in a pack.

You did your best and it sounds like nothing would have been enough. She wasn't happy. I think you did the right thing taking her back. I know it's hard for you guys though.

Some rescues won't allow you to adopt again if you've returned a dog. So if you have to go to a new one that doesn't know your history, ask them for a dog that's not fearful. I was looking back at your first post and you said there were signs when you first met her. Next time around, you can look for a dog that is more affectionate and interested in people. I was worried about Percy not connecting with us because he seemed to ignore me when I met him. Turns out he's super sweet and easy, but not super affectionate. He'll follow me around, but he doesn't come up to me for affection. When I pet him, I wonder if he even likes it. He doesn't wag when petted. If I stop and he doesn't walk away, I'll pet some more, figuring he likes it. I guess my point is, you can't always tell what a dog is like when first meeting them, but there are signs and the kennel people should know. The kennel lady told us Percy was sweet and would be easy and she was right. Good luck.

I've been following along and just wanted to add my admiration that you tried so hard with her. (And, as you said, she tried so hard with you.)

I've been wanting to comment but find I never have the right words. But I did want to say I am sorry it didn't work out for either of you. But know you did the right thing, firstly for her and secondly for you. She will find a home (or a kenne) where she feels safe and be happy. You will get another greyhound that will love you both and your home and make you happy . So while it's really really hard in the present, the future will be brighter. You are a great dog owner as you put the dog's happiness before your own. I know that's hard to do.
