Please Let Me Vent (Cry) To You Greyhound Lovers. We Might Lose Ours S

Recommended Posts

Mover hasn't been eating much the past week. He went into the vet today and while there he started to have internal bleeding and a belly full of blood. She did a couple different ultrasounds and labs, but can't figure out what's going on, only that there's a large mass or clot in his abdomen. We are currently in the process of transferring him to UC Davis Veterinary hospital (luckily one of the best around). I'm praying he can make the 1-2 trip from the clinic to the hospital and they can save him. He is on the older side (9.5 yes). I'm just heartbroken and crying. Dr said maybe it's his spleen, but she doesn't feel confident opening him up at their facility since he is having a difficult time clotting. I'm beyond stressed. Even worse I have a newborn so I can't be there right now, just my husband. Please pray for mover, he has been the most amazing dog.

9.5 is still young and strong enough to survive a tough surgery. Sending good thoughts for Mover.

Mover mate it over to UC Davis. After a few hours of evaluating him, they said he has cancer. It started in his spleen and spread throughout his body, including his heart. He is still having internal bleeding as well. They are trying to keep him stable and comfortable right now. The only course of treatment is surgery and chemotherapy and they said that would only extend his life for maybe 6 months, he would not have a great quality of life and would cost about 10k. The other option is to put him down. We have until 7am to make a decision (it's almost midnight right now). I am in such a terrible emotional state right now. Can anybody provide advice on what would I should do, or what you would do. I've never had to put a dog down and just can't fathom the idea right now. All I can do is cry. And then cry some more.

You say "Goodbye" to your boy with love in your heart because that is the kindest thing you can do for him.

Do you want him in pain? Of course you don't!

Do you want him distressed? No!

You have a new baby and are already emotional and tired but this is something you have to do. When we take our animals into our family we have to always keep their welfare and best interest to the forefront of our thinking. If your husband is still with Mover he can be with him at the end, supporting and loving him so that the last thing he knows is his human beside him.

Be strong and put Mover's interest first, you will regret it forever if you make his suffering last longer than necessary.

Carol,

who has had to do this too many times but accepts it as the price we pay for the love we receive from our pets.

We bring these grand souls into our lives because we love them and do our very best to ensure that they are as comfortable and pain-free as possible. We let them go because we love them and when it becomes clear that we can no longer keep them comfortable and pain free. The vets have said the cancer has spread throughout Mover's body. Carol's words above are more eloquent than I could hope to be. Please don't second-guess yourself: Tell Mover again how very much you love him, and then let him go, with your love ringing in his ears and his heart.

I am so sorry. :grouphug

So sorry the news wasn't better, but you need to do what is best for Mover..and that means letting him go.

this most likely has been the longest night in your life. cancer stinks, the outcome of medical intervention is costly and personally i feel the quality of life isn't worth the pain. i have lost 2 gh to osteo and my last saluki had cancer internally as yours does. once it hits, it hits. the decision to give your pup freedom of pain is always the heroic one. your pain from the sudden loss will diminish over time, but it doesn't go away. hugs to you and your family.

I've been where you are. It is a nightmare. Quality of life is the greatest gift we can give these beautiful souls. A peaceful death with dignity is another. I am so very, very sorry.

Gentle hugs. :heart

It's sounds like hemangiosarcoma. I've lost 3 to that horrible disease.

I'm so sorry.

This is what I thought as well. I have been there, one I let go right away, one I did the surgery. It only bought her six weeks, and the recovery from the surgery was hard, I would not do that again. It is so hard on you, but the best thing for him is to let him go. :bighug
