Guest GusTheBus
After seeing it for the first time and the reaction Gus had I knew hed love I... but man he went bananas. I have a spool of twine with a broken screwdriver jammed in handle first on one end and a plastic grocery bag tied to the other. The broken point of the screwdriver goes in a drill chuck. Then I hold the spool loosely with a leather glove on and hit the trigger. He caught it 3/3 times and was pooped lol Wife and I are brainstorming for a more permanent system but we are at least pointed in the right direction. Wed welcome any suggestions/advice/pointers on backyard DIY type projects. We arent signing him up for Little League or anything. Just want to get him more consistent exercise. Thanks in advance ! GreytHoundPoet
I have lure poles and the Simplure from the Greyt Chase (link: https://www.thegreytchase.com).I got one long enough to add pulleys. My dogs used to lure course competitively but we are in between retirement for my older ones and my youngest growing up so we play at home. greysmom
Sounds workable to me. Real lure courses have a motor (like a lawn mower size) that pulls the lure, but they're going over really long courses with a lot of turns. I think we need a video!! EllenEveBaz
Just brainstorming for Gus's backyard exercise enjoyment, maybe add a few elements of agility work -- Weave poles? Low hurdles? Lure poles here -- started out with bamboo pole with rope/plastic bag attached; have graduated to lunge whip with rope/plastic bag attached. I don't have a good enough sense of balance anymore to stand in a circle and twirl as a crazed dog tries to snatch the bag, but there's generally no lack of visitors who want to do it. I hadn't heard of the Simplure. It looks wonderful, but I can't figure out from the video how the string setup works. GreytHoundPoet -- what do you mean you got one long enough to add pulleys? Does that mean there's a way to use it without pulleys? You can get different lengths. In order to add turns with pulleys you need a significantly longer length than to run them straight. Turns that are too tight can cause injuries to fast hounds. If you do not use pulleys they just run straight to you. EllenEveBaz
If you do not use pulleys they just run straight to you. This is one of the things I don't understand. Do you drop the lure on the ground and just start slowly walking away, leaving line behind you? Then engage the drill/reel to bring it to you fast? What's to keep the dog from pouncing on the lure before you start the drill/reel? What's to keep the dog from pouncing on the lure before you start the drill/reel? No, you hold the drill and reel the entire time. You have to because it will not go on its own. Somebody stretches the line out to the end. Somebody has to hold the dog until it gets moving and the lure is far enough out not to get caught. It's a 2 person task. My husband holds the reel and runs it and I stretch the line out, grab the dog, and slip him/her.
