BatterseaBrindl
A non GT friend has a 7.5 year old Greyhound and I said that I would ask the great minds of GT. This is what she has posted yesterday to our small local Greyhound group FB page... "Hey everyone, Our 7 1/2 year old boy Chief (featured here with his kid brother Chico) has been limping from his back legs. It started a few months ago when we found him with his back legs on the couch and his front paws on the slippery floor in the sunroom, frozen in fear. We don't know how long he was in that position, and he started limping from there. We gave him anti-inflammatories and rest, and he would get better one day, then return to the same state. Now his pain is worse. Much worse, and it worsened a couple of days after his 2nd xray (the xray involves pulling his back legs as straight as possible in a very uncomfortable position). His pain now happens when he goes from a stationary position to movement. If he is already moving, there is little to no limp. If he was laying down for a while, he needs a little bit of warming up before he can put his back legs down with confidence. He is slower now to go down stairs, like he is unsure where his back legs are. After 2 xrays, nothing can be determined by our vet. Anyone here experience something like this? If not, know where we could get answers?!" ------- We do not have a major Vet school here nor do we have any ortho Vets. I have suggested that she get a second opinion from another local Vet (mine ) who has Greyhound experience and is certified in Chiro/Accupuncture and cold laser. Hydro therapy has also been suggested. We do have a couple of good places for that here. Quote Nancy...Mom to Sid (Peteles Tiger), Kibo (112 Carlota Galgos) and Joshi. JohnF
Poor dog... how worrying. Without myelography (dye under anaesthetic) I don't think you can rule out L.S. (cauda equina) Other possibilities would be: Slipped Disc (but why not seen on X-Ray?). Enlarged Prostate, Meningitis (but why so long-term?), or Cancer (often needs a very expereinced specialist to spot this). Basically go back to the vet or seek a second opinion. Pain relief is almost certainly necessary. From personal expereince, when walking down the stairs have the dog on a short lead and walk by his hips as he goes down. This will prevent him losing control and 'jack-knifing'. Edited October 28, 2017 by JohnF
greysmom
I will always recommend first that the xrays be sent to a competent radiologist to read when no specific injury is evident to normal vet eyes. Specialists are trained to spot things others miss and can often find small abnormalities overlooked at first glance. She can also have her vet send the rads to Dr Couto http://www.coutovetconsultants.com/for-ownersadopters/ Cold laser could be another modality that could help him if this is a chronic rather than acute injury, along with acupuncture. Unless and until it can be confirmed there's no disc involvement, I would stay away from chiropractic manipulation. He also may need a longer course of nsaids and rest to fully heal, along with a muscle relaxer (if it's not a disc issue). sobesmom
I'm just guessing but nerve or disk issues Neither can been seen easily on an x ray. Personal, human experience, I had huge back pain, and the x ray was clear. The MRI showed the herniated discs. Something is wrong.

I would seek advanced imaging at this point.

BatterseaBrindl
Thanks for everyones help. More from the owner... Fear of moving? Well, once he is done eating from his bowl, he veeeeery gingerly takes a step, careful to put weight down, then he takes another step, gauges, then another and then he's off and good to go like nothing happened. 3greytjoys
Additionally, runner rugs with rubber gripper mats placed underneath are really important to provide throughout all hard surface floor rooms and pathways that Chief and Chico use. Also, a full rug for standing at food/water bowls. Slips/falls on hard floors can cause serious injuries to our long-legged Greyhound breed. If Chief is jumping on furniture, perhaps consider encouraging him to stay on a thick dog bed on the floor during his recovery, or build a secure carpeted ramp, or stable short, wide carpeted steps leading to the sofa. I hope a radiologist and/or further testing will reveal Chief's painful injury. Positive healing thoughts for Chief.
