Hi, Michelle here - we are just about to experience our first night with Lilly, a 2 year old ex racer. Weve grown up with dogs, but never owned them before and never a greyhound! Weve got 2 children (4 and 7) Who are in love with her. The kids have been really good about giving her space and leaving her alone when shes in her crate.

I work from home and really wanted some company and a reason to get out and about a bit more. We also wanted the kids to grow up with a dog and all the fun that it entails!

There are lots of beautiful places to walk here, and We have a large fenced garden, so she will get lots of exercise.

I am nervous of doing the right or wrong thing and nervous about her settling down. But am really hopefully that shell relax and am really hoping that her first night in her crate goes well! Eek!

It's normal for her to be a little agitated on her first night in her new world, and it's normal for you to be nervous about it. Soon, you'll experience the wonder of the hound ability to go into deep, restful sleep no matter what the circumstance.

We need pictures!

she's entering an alien world, not at all like she was used to while racing, it'll take a while to settle down & find her place in your pack. they like routine. her past life had fixed times for walks, running around in a turnout, meals, training, etc. actually living in a house with humans is all new and worrisome as she struggles to learn the new rules. don't be discouraged if there are a few potty accidents as she adapts to your schedule & house rules. be consistent. never punish them when they do something wrong, praise them and treats when they do something right. work on recall before you let her anywhere outside off lead, unless it's fenced 100%, remember, she can be out of shouting range in seconds even if her recall appears good. sight hounds were bred for independence while hunting, so they can be a bit 'independent' and ignore your commands until they feel like obeying. (treats help in training). don't rush things, she'll settle in eventually. helps if they've been fostered in a home before you get them, but that's not entirely necessary. and some like having a crate for a secure area, some hate them and do better without. mine always have had couch and bed privileges, but if you prefer not, again be consistent, sometimes allowed is confusing for them. 2 yrs. old is being a teen ager for a greyhound...and good luck, hugs and kisses and lots of treats to your pup too.

Thanks to everyone for saying Hi! Lillys first night was awful, but I went and bought a calming plug in and spray and fed her in her crate and the second night she only whined when we first shut the door.

I also nipped out for a bit today and she didnt wine when I left and I couldnt hear her on my return. So compaired to Tuesdays howling, I am hoping shes finally feeling more comfortable in her crate.

We are going to try sleeping upstairs tonight (as we had taken it in turns sleeping on the sofa - she cant see us but we can talk to her.) my husband says she didnt make a peep last night, so fingers and toes crossed please!

She is also a lot more settled around the house, less pacing and sniffing. But she has decided that the garden is her toilet and refuses to wee or poo on a walk! Shell do it once she gets back instead.

I am also feeling more relaxed and am starting to enjoy her more. A good nights sleep definetly helped!

Hope it went well.

Have you thought about not crating her at night? Dogs like to sleep with their pack. I have dogbeds in almost every room in the house, but the dogs choose the ones on the floor by me.

Hi Ellen, she does love to be with us, but wed really like upstairs to be a dog free zone.

She whined a little last night and I shushed her. She then settled and I could go up to bed after 5 mins. So hopefully shes getting used to it. Fingers crossed for tonight!

No problem -- you can just get a second dog so they can sleep together downstairs :)

So much better! Shes really settled well John, now I just need to work on her recall! Weve been practicing at the park (completely enclosed) with some tasty sausage and a very loud dog whistle. She has gotten the message that she gets a tasty treat if she comes back, but other dogs and people are far too interesting! She is brilliant at night and I can pop her in her crate for an hour or 2 (during the day) no problem.
