Pork Scratching...

Hi new to forum.

I've been browsing the forum for a while, getting tips and tricks.

So I've had my hound for a month she's a bit of a cat in dogs clothing, now and again she has a mad ten mins and barks and hops around. The kids love it.

She don't really do much other than sleep and has never been any trouble at all.

But this morning she's managed to pull a pack of pork scratching off the kitchen side, rip the bag and eat the lot. I was none the wiser as her eating her food its normally just crunching sounds. Now I'm worried that the salt content of these is pretty high, she seems OK she's asleep as usual now, is there any signs I need to look out for, should I nip to vets to be on safe side. Or give her time and see if she's OK.

I can't find much at all on pork scratching and harmfulness to dogs.

Thanks for any advice, I'm hoping I'm worried for nothing.

Those *Pork Scratchings are only in a small bag usually and I don't think it will hurt a dog as large as a greyhound. She might get a bit of diarrhoea and a headache for a while. Take it as a dot on the learning curve of being a greyhound owner. Dog proof everything you want to keep safe to above counter height. Grapes, Macadamia nuts, chocolate, anything with Xylitol sweetener in it should never left on the coffee table

(*in the UK pork joints are cooked with their skin rind on which turns into very tasty crackling which people enjoy eating either with the roast or later dried in bags when drinking in pubs)

:nod What John F said.

If she enjoyed the pork scratchings and you want to provide a doggy equivalent, look out for pigs' ears. You can get them at the supermarket/pet shop - whole ears, dehydrated and rather greasy. Both my boys always loved them but go cautiously, some will try to bolt without chewing (Ken I'm looking at you!) and they are also a bit rich for some dogs' stomachs.

"It is also to be noted of every species, that the handsomest of each move best ... and beasts of the most elegant form, always excel in speed; of this, the horse and greyhound are beautiful examples."----Wiliam Hogarth, The Analysis of Beauty, 1753.

Guess it depends on how much she ate.

I'd give the Vet a call ...just to be on the safe side.

Just back off a long walk, she seems fine. Eating grass like a bloody cow.

But other than that usual behavior, we'll see on the night time walk how her guts are. Thanks for the advice.

She's started to do a very fast teeth chatter you can just hear it, I've read its a good sign so all being well she's in good spirits.

She *should* be fine - as John said, maybe some diarrhea and stomach upset, so you could also see some vomiting.

The biggest thing to watch out for is pancreatitis, which is very serious. It can happen in susceptible dogs after they eat a lot of fatty food. The vet is in order right away if she has bloody diarrhea (as opposed to "just" diarrhea!) and multiple vomiting with no appetite.

Congrats on your adoption and good luck!
