Hello, I just joined the forum. We just adopted this guy 2 weeks ago:

Bentley

5 years old. Last raced almost exactly 1 year ago.

So far we seem to be doing great at adjusting to life with each other. He is learning to fit into our life, sometimes literally! (We do not have a big house, or big cars, but he sure has long legs!)

I've been reading some recent posts in this forum, and have learned a bit so far. I hope you don't mind if I have various newbie questions to ask.

...and a worldwide family.

Congrats. And welcome from Germany. Bentley is a beautiful boy. Ask all the question - we will have dozens of different answers to choose from. 😉😁

Thank you. The photo doesn't include his great tail which has several inches of white on the end :) How common is black and white? There are several local greyhounds, I think all from our adoption organization, that are similar, but I don't know if they are related, I should ask.

We are in New England. This Florida dog will get his first real winter soon! My wife is making him a nice thick and long sweater. (Might also get a coat with a hood?) He loves taking nice brisk walks of about a mile or so, hopefully he will still be into short walks in the winter too.

Looking for other opportunities for excersize, he hasn't had much chance to run or play off leash so far. Researching options for a small fenced area in our yard. At a nearby dog park he spends all his time socializing with each and every dog!

<<How common is black and white?" Here's a link to a population of about 2,000 racing hounds: http://www.gulfcoastgreyhounds.org/color_stats.htm If you scroll down, you'll see the overall percentages. I hope someone more knowledgeable than I am will chime in, but I think a "tuxedo" hound like Bentley would be classified as a black (18% of population) rather than a black and white.

I used to take my hounds to the weekly playgroups at our adoption kennel. 12 dogs at a time in a spacious field, the dogs all lying down or schmoozing with the humans, and a few people occasionally stalking around, flapping their arms and yelling, "Run, run!" at the perfectly comfortable hounds. Then, once or twice in an hour, they would suddenly all arise as one and run like the wind for about 15 seconds before settling down again in a panting heap.

Thanks guys! Yes his national association registration is Black (Bk) and other forms he's black with white. From your link black is about 18% and black & white is less than 1, I assume that would be something like a large patch of black/white?

Over the last few weeks he seems to really love walks, and often to cruise along at a quick trot (slow jogging pace or quick hiking pace for me.)

I think I'm going to put up a sort of temporary fence near the house for the remainder of the fall, and see if we want to do something more permanent in the spring.

I have a bunch of metal T-posts and some 4 foot high thick plastic netting, I may add onto that to be 5' or more, and see if I can get it well secured to the inside of the posts

with zip ties and metal wire, and make gates.

I have a long term goal for training willow and other plants into a living fence around a 1/2 acre area of my property but maybe I can accelerate that and

install a fence there since it will take several years at least for those bushes to grow into a good barrier.

I bet fences are discussed here somewhere so I will search.

Thanks again for the warm words of welcome!

Congratulations on your new pup.

FYI: This may not be his first taste of winter. Many pups are born and raised in Kansas, Iowa and some in Missouri and Colorado and one in Pennsylvania. There are a couple of farms in Florida and some in Texas.
