GreyStella
I am looking at getting a greyhound. Is there any cons to getting a female who has had litters?

Scoutsmom
Broodies have a self-confidence about them that comes from having to deal with all those kids and being spoiled by their servants (kennel workers). My broodie, Mindy, was wonderful.

greytpups
Add me to the "I am totally and hopelessly in love with my Broodie". Only con is that Katie was a bit older, but then nothing in life is guaranteed, especially after losing. Brooke at age 9. GreyStella
Is there any kind of health related drawbacks? I heard something about bone density? I like the idea about the confidence.
EllenEveBaz
Is there any kind of health related drawbacks? I heard something about bone density? Not really. There's general controversy about health pros/cons of spaying and neutering in general, and some spillover controversy into pros/cons of age at spaying. Broodies generally are spayed later than most other female retired racers. They don't benefit from the reduced risk in breast cancer that early spaying evidently conveys, but then, most other female retired racers are spayed later rather than early so that wouldn't be a difference. But look what I found below: But by far the most startling news to surface this year is the result of a study that shows that keeping ovaries to the age of six years or later is associated with a greater than 30% increase of lifespan in female Rottweilers.4 Similar studies in humans reinforce this finding. 7,11 A 30% longer lifespan means that you could have many additional years with your bitch simply by delaying spay surgery until middle-age or later. 4 Nolen, R. Scott “Rottweiler Study Links Ovaries With Exceptional Longevity” JAVMA March 2010 avma.org/onlnews/javma/mar10/100301g.asp Another word for confidence is "bossy." Most broodies will teach other dogs proper manners with no prompting. As posted above, broodies are on the older side when adopted so if life progresses as expected you'll have a few less years with them. But as also posted, nothing in life is certain. What is practically certain is that within a very short time after you adopt a broodie, she will have you wrapped around her little dewclaw and your own life will expand with love and joy. Keep us posted, and we'll want pictures! Neighsayer
Congrats! My broods were sisters. One had over 20 puppies, and the other only 7. They were great dogs! I took them home from the hospital together after their spays. I had trouble fitting them in the car with cones on their heads, but they were fine at home with bite not collars instead of cones. I always have five dogs at a time, and they were great with all dogs who came into the house. Good luck!

GreyStella
Thank you! She was in a home for 2 years, but at some point they started ignoring her and leaving her outside. She went back into a foster home for about 2 weeks and is now here with me. I cant describe how wonderful she is. I have been waiting for 7 years to be able to do this. Banjoman
If she has already lived in a home and a foster home you might be lucky and find she makes the transition to living with you an easy job! She will just have to get used to your routine (or you get used to hers) and hopefully the pair of you will share many happy years together.
