Hookworms...help!

I adopted Trixie 3 months ago. She came from a track in Florida. She had tapeworms and hookworms. Tapes are gone but she still has hooks. She's been given four rounds of Drontal (3 weeks apart) and now the vet is going to try Panacur. I pick up her poop immediately from the back yard and throw some fast-acting lime over the area (per the vet's instructions) to make sure no eggs infect the soil. My other two dogs (not greys) were negative.

Is this common amoung greyhounds? If you had them, how did you get rid of them?

Thanks for any help.

Yes, it's common in dogs from Florida. We did Q's regular Interceptor (heartworm meds with a parasite preventative) on the first of the month, and a different heartworm med (Heartgard Plus) on the 15th of the month, and we did that for two months. That still didn't get them so after a heartworm-only month, we did the Interceptor again on the first, and Panacur on the 15th; and did that again for two months. Much to my surprise, that got 'em.

we picked up a 2yo track dog Derby Lane on 7/13. Track dewormed as precaution. Blood work was fine. Spay and dental done after 1 week More involved spay as she just started a heat cycle. Hook test was negative. After antibiotics finished, poop was pudding. Took poop to vet today and hook test was 3+. We are on 5 day course of Panacur and she will be delivered to her forever family Sat.

Yes, they are so difficult to get rid of. Your vet nay have explained that they can migrate to organs where there will then be dormant cysts that can reinfect later so my advice is be very aggressive now. I suspected Violet had them after I adopted her (my group deworms all incoming dogs prophylactically so she had had 2 doses of something like Drontal 3 weeks apart), but symptoms persisted, namely very mucousy stool that was often large or soft and she was just a really hard keeper. Rather than continuing to do fecals in the hopes of catching a pisitive result in just treated aggressively with Panacur. I can't remember if I did 3 or 5 day courses, but I did them initially, then 3 weeks later and then I think again 3 weeks later. We havent had an issue since.

My memory is a little rusty, but there are a couple of threads on this topic in this forum. I would search H&M for "hookworm" and they should come up.

We got our Florida grey in March with hooks. 3 rounds of Panacure at 3 weeks apart, and no luck. Then I heard that hooks actually have a 2 week life cycle. I dud 2 rounds if Drotal at 2 week intervals. We've now had 2 negative results in the past month (second test was today). We're still dealing with loise stool though,so I'm not sure what to think. I'll do another test in 2 more weeks. Best if luck. These Florida dogs have been going through some pretty rough times.

Just keep at 'em ... I've got a pup that I adopted in April who had hooks. I've just finished her 5th round of treatment and gotten her first negative test (well, she had a negative test after round 3, but had a positive test (bad) 3 weeks later so we had to start over again). Drontal didn't work for her (3 rounds), but Panacur seems to be working. Gosh I hate these little critters!
