NeylasMom
How fast does it usually happen? I'm worried my hydrogen peroxide is too old. I got maybe 2 T down (Violet is 60 lbs) about 15-20 min ago (maybe?) and just did another tablespoon. So far nothing except a little went down the wrong pipe and she horked up some white foamy stuff just now, bit no real stomach contents. I'm not even sure she ate most of it, could have been Skye but was hoping to avoid inducing vomiting in both unless necessary. But tick tock on when they ate it. NeylasMom
My vet got on the phone with me. She said it can take a while. Shes doing some gagging, but so far no actual vomiting. And now I'm freaked out about what could happen if she doesnt vomit it because of the bubbles in her stomach. She's telling me to watch for bloat. I hope she just throws up soon. NeylasMom
Yes, it normally happens almost instantly with my guys. But I also throw out an opened bottle and go buy a new one the same week.Yeah, I thought I had one unopened but they were both open for some reason. I am on hold with poison control. Starting to freak out. I called Trader Joes to get the content of the cocoa and caffeine in what she ate and there is a lot. She still has not thrown up, we're closing in on 2 hrs since she probably ate them and I still don't have confirmation that it was her and not Skye. NeylasMom
Well we are at the e-vet. Violet threw up, but not as far as I can tell everything which means both are still at risk for toxicity. So I think we're about to have an IV induced barf fest. I just hope they are both okay. Guest goofydog2
So sorry you've ended up at the e-vet. Gentle scritches for Violet. And yes, hydrogen peroxide degrades quickly once exposed to air. I try to keep 1-3 of the small bottles (not sure if it's a pint, like school milk bottles) on hand and toss once opened. Response is usually less than 1 minute. Please let us know how V is doing. NeylasMom
I was actually able to test the peroxide and it was still good (she suggested pouring it on a sponge because it bubbles in response to bacteria). My vet saod it can take up to an hour and thats about what it was for Violet, just so others know. You can do harm overdoing the peroxide too. 3greytjoys
Glad Violet vomited. So sorry this is happening! Positive thoughts for Violet and Skye! Even though your hydrogen peroxide was still good, this is a reminder for us to restock fresh bottles of hydrogen peroxide (in case vomiting needs to be induced for soft things only). (Non-edible hard or sharp objects ingested require veterinary attention to prevent harm while item is being expelled.) NeylasMom
Well it's a barf fest in here. Violet vomited a ton, but no more visible cookies, which is frightening because that makes me think a good bit got absorbed though she vomited a ton of dark liquid and she had been drinking a lot of water so hopefully much of it was just in liquid form. Because we didn't see more cookies we induced Skye as well. She didnt vomit much and I could only see cheese. I really don't think she ate any. Theyre talking to poison control about whether to do activated charcoal, fluids, etc. I suspect we will only do it with Violet. I am so upset with myself. I NEVER leave chocolate out and I never have cookies like this in the house. I just ran upstairs to grab something and got distracted by ants teeming in my kitchen and then when I took the trash out my neighbor was out and we got chatting. I think thats when Violet got bored and went to town. ivon
Dont beat yourself up, a few years ago, when I still had 3 dogs, a pound of coffee beans disappeared from my counter, 2 Greyhounds and a Great Pyr, I had no idea who ate how much, if one ate all, or all ate some, I just kept an eye on all three. None seemed to feel bad, so I let it got, they all turned out fine. Same Greyhound who wolfed down a pound of grapes, and was fine.... (I found out after the fact, teenagers and all.....) Neighsayer
Hope everyone is ok. All of mine would vomit within five minutes. Good to know that it could take an hour. I always used one capful, with another after five minutes. I never had to wait longer than that. Sorry for all that you had to go through! NeylasMom
We're home. After forcing a ton of charcoal down Viilet's throat and them recommending hospitalization and IV fluids I decided to call Trader Joe's back, at which point I learned I had been GROSSLY misinformed about the amount of chocolate in the cookies. So poison control redid their calculations and we learned that they probably both would have been okay if they shared them with no intervention and that Violet would have been absolutely fine having vomited about 50% from the peroxide like she did. So basically the entire vet visit was unnecessary because Trader Joe's told me the wrong thing. Well ultimately its my fault, and I blame myself for not calling them back sooner because the number they gave me was so suspicious, but I had pressed her multiple times and she kept telling me it was right. The important thing is both dogs seem okay. Skye is pretty much totally fine though she was terrified when Violet started SCREAMING when they gave her a Cerenia shot, but mostly she is just wondering why she hasnt gotten dinner. Violet is obsessing over water, but I am rationing per the vet's instructions to make sure she doesn't vomit it. Her tummy is gurgling a good bit. I am defrosting some chicken breast for Skye and may make scrambled egg for Violet in a bit. They said not to feed her, but I think she'll feel better with something mild in her belly. Anyone have experience with activated charcoal? Is the thirst normal with that? Would you feed a bit or not? juliemac
I'm so sorry you all had to go through this, but really glad that things are a bit better than you originally thought! Here's my favorite interactive website, thanks to my (now angel) sweet lover, riley -- it's national Geographic's interactive chocolate guide for dogs & their expected reaction to different types of chocolate products http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2007/10/pets/chocolate-chart-interactive I also learned that getting some activated charcoal in them to take care of any residual poison is not a bad idea and can't hurt (don't freak out over the resulting black poop, though). robinw
I had a similar thing happen last week. I a partially chewed, empty box of Imitrex with no sign of the pills. I induced, vomiting in both of them, and one off hours visit to the vet, two X-rays and two days later, I found the untouched blister pack of pills. My vet suggested buying small bottles of hydrogen peroxide and giving 50cc to start. She said once the bottles have been opened, they lose their fizz and effectiveness. Okay, not really, sorry you had to go through something similar. Girls seem to be doing okay. Skye is completely fine, like nothing happened and I just hope this doesnt change how she acts at the vet. Though her gas last night was horrific. Violet's stomach is gurgling like crazy, but she had a very firm (if black) poop. Both of them ate some scrambled eggs last night and kept those down. Getting ready to feed them each some more eggs along with some cooked chicken breast. Violet does seem really sore. I'm not sure if something aggravated her disc issue or she's just sore from all if the retching or its gas/stomach pain, but shes very stiff in her back end and was really slow on her walk. But I suspect she just needs a day or two to recover from that. And her massage therapist comes Thursday morning. Looks like the worst is over, hopefully. KF_in_Georgia
If you get a chance, try taking the girls by your vet's office and have the techs feed something yummy. My Tigger's first vet visit with me was to get microchipped; his second was for a shot of cerenia when we discovered the hard way that he was lactose intolerant (he couldn't stop vomiting). He was furious at the shot and turned on the techs, who quickly got out of his way. Then he turned around and put his head against my chest for sympathy. We did an "all's forgiven" visit to the techs; I don't know if that fixed things or if he was just naturally forgiving, but he always liked that vet. NeylasMom
One positive visit isn't going to undo that disaster. I'm hoping that ALL of the work we've done prior to get both girls happy at the vet was enough for this one visit to not undo it, though it was a pretty freaking aversive visit for all of us. Thankfully it wasn't our regular vet's office. Anyway, its a good suggestion, but we are at the vet weekly for Violet's acupuncture anyway. I usually take Skye because she doesn't like being left home alone and she gets goodies for hanging on the couch with me so I suspect she'll be fine. Violet is more complicated because after her rhabdo incident she became fearful at the vet. We had worked so hard to undo that, successfully for the most part though there is usually mild stress if we have to go to a new clinic, so I always bring a stuffed Kong and high value food and will give her extra calming supplements in anticipation if I think it's warranted and she usually settles with those, but each bad incident will set her back a little. Even if she is worried, she'll eventually come around, I just hope she's not afraid of the needles for acupuncture. The vet was an absolute ahole about the Cerenia and gave me no warning, just grabbed Violet by the scruff and stuck the needle in. It was going to hurt no matter what, but she completely surprised her and I have learned there are ways to five these guys warnings so they're not as scared. After it happening with Neyla's sedation injection before she was euthanized I'm a lot more aware of how much can be just surprise/fear rather than actual discomfort. I was really unhappy with their handling the whole time. I kept saying things and finally said rstjer sternly "If you want them to do something, just tell me and I'll ask them to do it, they're well trained." Ack, sorry, bone of contention for me. Anyway, I appreciate the suggestion. We'll see what happens when we go for acupuncture next week.
