Nova
Dory has always really struggled with the heat, and having moved back down to Phoenix where the temperature averages anywhere between 5 to 15 degrees above a hundred, she's been having a hard time. She's started to get heat rash on her belly/butt, and while it doesn't seem to bother her Dory never shows any signs of discomfort when somethings bothering her. I know it's not a major health concern unless it gets infected, so I've been keeping a careful eye on it/icing it when she's down for a nap, but I was wondering if any of you guys know some better ways to help take care of it? cleptogrey
medicated powder to keep it dry? amens, gold bond or BFI foot powder will keep it dry so she doesn't get a fungus.
Newgreymom
Are you sure it's not a staph infection? One time Grace had a rash which I thought was from the heat, and it was a staph infection. Maybe have the Vet check it out?
sobesmom
Corn starch? My grandma swore my it for babies with heat rash -and it worked better than any ointment.

Maybe have the Vet check it out? check it out, good call. we usually deal w/ fungus around here. but it's most definitely worth a scraping. btw, corn starch will promote yeast growth. GeorgeofNE
Pretty sure dogs don't get "heat rash." Whatever is causing the rash--it could be something as simple as a flea allergy, something she brushed up against like a bush with little tiny irritating "hairs," but in all my life of owning dogs I've never heard of one getting "heat rash." I'd have the vet check it out with under magnification. Quote Susan, Hamish, Mister Bigglesworth and Nikita Stanislav. waialua
This will sound strange.... In our area we have "no see ums" that really go after the tender parts of my horse. Between the legs, along the belly. Very itchy! He will bite himself raw! Originally I got a hair product, Blue Magic, for his lustrous long mane. It is a human hair product! It is the only thing that relieves the itching, heals the skin, and makes his mane and tail look....well, sexy. Not only that I use it on my hair ends. In a very dry climate it helps my split ends. It just may help ypur dog.

EllenEveBaz
Poor Dory. I would be cautious about putting any lotion on a dog's skin that might be harmful if the dog started licking it. I hope Dory isn't as bad at licking as Milo is -- he will lick at ANYTHING. He loves all the stuff you put on to try to keep a dog from licking. http://www.heatrash.org/heat-rash-on-dogs-and-cats/ Quote Ellen, with brindle Milo and the blonde ballerina, Gelsey remembering Eve, Baz, Scout, Romie, Nutmeg, and Jeter
cleptogrey
i was just camping with the dogs in a campground loaded with no-see-ums. dh and i were miserable- the bites were showing up for a full 5 days and lingered for 2 weeks. the dogs did not have one bite what so ever, so that sorta rules out no-see-ums.
