Guest Venditts
Hi everybody! Very new to greytalk. My beautiful 11yo broodie phoebe recently broke her hock jumping THROUGH our porch gates chasing a deer...she is a very energetic and playful pup to an extreme, especially for her age. She wore a splint for 6 weeks and no progress in the break was made so she will need the surgery in the net few weeks : (This is my first grey, so I was wondering if I could get some advice! I purchased the webmaster harness for lifting and lots of fluffy dog beds everywhere so far.
KF_in_Georgia
Maybe less fluff on the beds for a while. When she walks on a soft bed, her foot may bend where it shouldn't. Firmer footing might be safer.(I've got a broken-hock boy who had surgery to install a bone screw after he was injured in a race.)Prepare for lots of leash-walking: no running--or gate-jumping--at all for a while. greysmom
Here's a link for the harness. Make sure you measure as suggested for the best fit Though the straps are adjustable up and down about a 1/2 size you need the back portion to fit well. http://www.ruffwear.com/30102-web-master-harness A word of caution: I'm assuming that you are absolutely certain her break was not osteosarcoma related. An un-healing break of a large bone in an older dog nearly always involves cancer. Guest Venditts
Thank you! 100% certain not osteosarcoma-everything else looks normal. we take her to the orthopedic specialist on Tuesday Edited July 27, 2017 by Venditts
GeorgeofNE
We've all read way too many stories that start exactly this way that end up as osteo. Once the bone broke (and approx. 40% of all osteo cases are discovered when a bone breaks) if it broke where the tumor was, you need an expert to review the films. If she were my dog, I'd have those films sent to Dr. Couto ASAP. Don't mean to sound like Debbie Downer, but normal, healthy 11 year old legs don't just snap and then fail to heal. FiveRoooooers
My 10+ yo broodie came to me at age 7.5 with a repaired hock she broke in her final race at age 4. She also has a nasty corn on that same foot. This Spring she broke a toe on the opposite front limb. We have multiple films of multiple body parts and repeat films of many of them. While OS is always a nagging thought, we do not see anything to suggest its presence in this dog. If anything changes with her you can bet that Dr Couto will be on board asap. Please come back and let us know how your girl is doing. Best of luck! Edited July 27, 2017 by FiveRoooooers Quote Old Dogs are the Best Dogs. Thank you, campers. Current enrollees: Punkin. SanTanSnuggles
Wishing you the best. I do not know where you are from, but Greyhound Friends Of NJ got my San Tan Snuggles with her broken leg from the track. They sent her to a hospital and had it repaired. I got her four days after the cast was removed. The hospital there did a great job. Linda Lyman should be able to tell you where the repair was done if you are interested. http://www.greyhoundfriendsnj.org/ Ohio State I understand also has vet services as well as the University of PA. Dutton Road Veterinary Clinic is near Philadelphia Pa and work with greyhound rescues, etc. They have done a lot of work on their legs. I met them at Greyhounds at the Beach in Dewey Last Year as one of my greyhounds had a tumor and it turned out that he did not need it amputated. They were very informative and did negotiate the cost with us, which is something you do not see much of when it comes to medical costs. I saw a post someone sent to you about Dr. Cuto. He has a place in PA. Dr. Cuto has decades of repairing their troubled limbs. He is awesome. .
