Resource Guarding

I have 3 dogs our grey is the newest one. The other 2 are small one is a chihuahua/shi toy mix and one is a schnauzer mix. The smallest of the three is the one with resource guarding issues and that is causing a bit of a problem. She get grumpy if the other dogs mess with her food or her toy even if she is nowhere near said toy. I have managed the food issue by keeping them separate and crated to eat but hate having to keep the toys and chewiness all picked up. She had gotten better but has regressed with our newest addition to the household. She has zero issues with the humans, just with the other dogs. Thanks in advance for any suggestions:

Sorry. My advice, at least until your pack settles down after the addition of someone new, is to keep all the toys and treats firmly under your control and supervision. If your little one needs some play time, take her out on her own, or into another room by herself and let her play with her favorites. You could also put her inside a large crate (like the greyhound sized one) with her toys loose. Just make sure they are all out of there before putting another dog in for crating.

Thank you for the advice. That is what I did, we thought we had all the toys picked up but we overlooked one and there was a small scuffle last night ( no one was hurt thankfully ). We looked through the house again to make sure everything was picked up. I told everyone no toys no treats no food unless the dogs are separated, (if Eevee our little one is in a room alone with a closed door, or in a crate fine otherwise no.). I am seperating the other two as well for the time being until we are sure they are both solid as well since everything is still very new but so far they have been just fine. Thanks again

One of our angels was a super resource guarder - anything anywhere that she could physically see was "hers" even if it was all the way across the room from her! Fortunately, hers was only about food, and we knew exactly what the root of the problem was and could manage it. Over time she finally realized that we wouldn't allow any of the other dogs to take her food or treats away from her, and she began to get better. She always had some level of guarding and we always had to be aware, never leaving her and the other dogs without supervision when food/treats were involved, but she *did* get much better in time.

We can't leave any toys out here, even though I bought identical ones for them all. One will always want what another has, even though they are identical.

 

Toy time is now outside one dog at a time.

 

Except for Allen. He likes to take my shoes for walkabouts in the house.

Since we removed all the toys there have been no further issues and the dogs are warming up to each other. Today Willow discovered the couch and they all three shared the space very nicely. We are all quite smitten with her.
