Guest pattibruch
Hi! I have an almost 12 year old female grey that started limping in January. Exrays showed no osteo but worn to no cartiledge in rear right knee..bone on bone basically. She is a petite female with no other issues. She's been on Carprofen, Tramadol, and recently Trazadone for Anxiety. Today I noticed swelling (effusion?) at that joint down to the paw. The "good" rear leg is now showing muscle loss due to bearing all of the weight due to the bad leg. I've had greys for over 20 years. Lost one to osteo and this is almost frightenly similar. Could a cortisone shot help? Am ready for the inevitable. Don't want her to suffer
Time4ANap
If you're unsure of the diagnosis or the x-ray reading, by all means get a second opinion. Dr. Cuoto will do a consult remotely using the images taken by your vet. The last time we did one the fee was $ 130.00. and it was extremely reassuring to have his input instead of an x-ray reading by a general radiologist since we were dealing with an unknown issue causing a limp. http://www.coutovetconsultants.com/ Wishing you and your girl the best. GeorgeofNE
Cortisone shots are useful for people like me with a little bit of cartilidge left because it is a super powerful antiinflammatory. If her knee is "bone on bone" (which I think your subject title is intended to say) then there is nothing to shoot the cortisone into. So no, it won't help. The leg bearing the bulk of her weight should not have LOST muscle. That doesn't even make sense. Unless something else is going on. Has she seen an orthopedic specialist? turbotaina
I would get a second opinion. By and large, greyhounds have fantastic knees and hips, so I'm always wary of diagnoses of issues there (not that they can't happen, but they're pretty rare). A good orthopedic specialist is worth his/her weight in gold. Also, by all means, do consult with Couto. He's awesome. Quote Meredith with Heyokha (HUS Me Teddy) and Crow (Mike Milbury).
