Guest Zoopy
Hi, I've recently adopted a 7 year old ex racer who lived in a home for the last 3 years but was given up. I've had 3 rescue dogs before, all mutts, greyhounds are an all new experience to me! He's settled in really well, the only issue I've had was barking when left alone in the kitchen as I'd always previously left my dogs here. This was stopped immediately with run of downstairs and the sofa! My question is am I setting myself up for any issues letting him on the sofa whilst I'm out. He's not "allowed" on the sofa when home, just because there isn't enough room. Only twice he's got on when I'm in it, I just got his cheese box out, called him to his doggy sofa and since then he's only been there when I'm home. Any advice appreciated, as I said I'm very new to greyhounds. Thanks
greysmom
Dogs can distinguish between rules, the same way a toddler would. You might make it easier on yourself by teaching him a command like "off" or "bed" so you don't need to use a treat to lure him all the time - though I'm sure he would disagree! If you haven't yet, you should read "Retired Racing Greyhounds for Dummies." Some of it is a bit out of date, but it's a great introduction to the breed and characteristics. Training books by Patricia McConnell are always good for general behavioral advice. It sounds like he's settling in well and fairly easily! Congratulations on your adoption and welcome to Greytalk! GeorgeofNE
Congrats! Since this fellow is already used to the home, he should be pretty much "plug and play." No reason he can't use the sofa when it's free, and be taught to get down when you want it. But do yourself a favor--just surrender now and get a bigger sofa, or a recliner for yourself! Guest Zoopy
Hahaha thanks for the info, I do feel that getting an older boy was a wise move for my first greyhound, they are definitely a bit different to what I've been used to but adorable. He's not yet attempted the sofa again since I've been on it but I like the idea of a recliner!!
