Percy (Fast But True)

He had been found running the streets in Florida, ended up at Animal Control, pulled by Carol Becker Rizzo, and rehabbed by the GPA-Senior Sanctuary.

Percy joined our family in the summer of 2015. At nearly 11 and in somewhat poor health we didn't think the next year would be easy. It sure wasn't.

He came to us with only 8 teeth, some suspicious scars under his jawline (prong collar maybe?), and duct tape residue on his snout. His original adoption group had folded and it was thought that his owner was in prison.

Percy's rough medical journey with us began with the pulling of 6 more teeth, leaving only the 2 bottom canines. He was my first of 17 dogs to be a bleeder, leading me to become educated in Amicar and Tranexamic Acid. "Get here now!" are not the words you want to hear from your vet during dental extractions. Bleeding out, barely breathing, unresponsive - he came out of it and we brought him home thinking he wouldn't make it through the night. But come morning he was demanding breakfast like nothing ever happened.

A few months later he had breathing difficulty that was diagnosed as laryngeal paralysis. Since it was caught early we were able to start on Doxepin (thanks Jjng!). His next medical crisis was a bubble of tissue that appeared on his back leg. Didn't look suspicious until it burst and wouldn't stop bleeding. He had to keep a pressure wrap on for weeks. finally the diagnosis was dermal hemangiosarcoma. It gradually went away on its own. Xrays showed no internalization. But Percy wasn't done with my credit card yet - he had developed Pannus. At least that was easily treatable.

This big goofy boy was the biggest medical challenge my husband and I have had in taking in seniors. He certainly must have had 9 lives, though he'd spent most of those in Florida.

Yet nothing ever bothered him unless I was late at meal time. Sleeping in late was not allowed and I'd awake to his wonky tooth snout poking under the covers. He couldn't bark but could do a muted "wffff, wffff". I'd get the same wake up most nights, needing to go and poo or pee.

His favorite toy were his 3 screaming monkeys. He'd greet me at the door with one, often wake me in the morning with one, and always needed to take one outside with him.

GPA-SS told me he wouldn't eat out of a raised feeder and that he preferred to eat on his bed. Yup. He liked to eat on the couch too.

Percy was always willing to help Mazy and iggy Charlie chase squirrels. His speed slowed as arthritis and an achy body took its toll. Meds now gave little relief.

On the day he left us Percy ran with our foster dog in pursuit of another pesky squirrel. Only this time he took a few steps before faltering. He was quivering and looking at me as if to wonder, why can't I run? He had not broken any bones, but he had had several more swollen lymph nodes pop up in the past week. He couldn't jump into the car (something he always did with ease) and he wouldn't lay down (something he always did immediately). I put the windows down and let him sniff the passing air on our drive to the vet. he left us there, gently and without a struggle. He was ready to go. We were so close to selfishly keeping him a day too long.

Thank you, Carol and GPA-Senior Sanctuary, for entrusting us with his care though you barely knew us.

Thank you Percy, for being the biggest goofball, mudpuddle-loving, mud-eating, screaming monkey lover, and gentle "wfff wfff" boy.

Your shoe peg wonky buck teeth amused us to no end. We were so sorry that they had to come out, yet happy to gaze upon your wacky warthog lower canine.

I'm so sorry. Percy's twilight years were certainly very loving and kind. I know it hurts a lot but how lucky you are to have Percy in your life to love and receive love unconditionally.

Seniors have a way of simultaneously stealing and breaking the hearts of those who love them. What a funny, goofy, happy, sweet, loving boy who found his way to you. We are so going to miss you Percy, you were, as your mom said, a good dog. Ducky and family, I am just so very sorry you didn't get more time. Thank you for sharing your lovebug with us. :grouphug
