macoduck
New adopter just told me dog has whipworms. Kennel gave them 3 pills. I don't know the name of them. Isn't repeat testing and treatment needed? They know to pick poop up immediately. Will spraying the poop spot with bleach help? They have 2 other dogs. Must all now be treated? What's the name of the med they should be taking? Time4ANap
Panacur is effective for whip worms but they could also have been given Drontal Plus or 1 of a couple of other meds that would work. Panacur should be repeated in a second treatment according to the package directions. If they are buying it OTC, it is packaged as SafeGuard brand, but is produced on the same manufacturing lines as Panacur which is the product that vets sell. Most large pet suppliers have SafeGuard. I think that most of the product require a second treatment 10 - 21 days later which varies by product. Many of the monthly heart worm pills also contain ingredients that guard against whip worms. They should check the specs on their monthly heart worm meds. If it controls whip worm then they shouldn't need another treatment for the others unless a problem develops. Here's some more whip worm info regarding transmission and cleanup etc : http://www.doodycalls.com/resources-whipworms/ Quote Camp Broodie. macoduck
Treat in 3 weeks and 3 months. Retest the stool 2 weeks after the last dose of de-wormer. Will she need to continue to pick up poop immediately and spray with bleach from now until that last retesting? Should she get her other 2 dogs (doxies) tested at some point? tbhounds
Once whips get into the soil it's really tough to rid of them. Sadly, the ova will survive even a freeze, however, wouldn't go crazy-clean up any fecal matter ASAP and get them on monthly heartworm prevention (heartgard plus is one). macoduck
Did they seriously not ask the vet any questions?? Yikes. They just adopted her on Saturday and were given some pills from the kennel. They did speak with their own vet, even though it was after his office hours.
