Urine Bladder Kidney Prostate Ideas...

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Our grey KC has exhibited symptoms of bladder/prostate issues. We are trying to figure it out and would appreciate input. Here's the short version:

It all started with a couple of inappropriate pees in the house. Not small, rather bladder emptying pees shortly after already peeing outside.

Grabbed a sample and off to the vet. Antibiotics for 7 days and no issues. Clean and dry for 10 days then he just started dripping after coming in from peeing. I think he was unaware.

Off to the vet, this time a cysto and culture and antibiotics (different class) and while on antibiotics, is asymptomatic but 3 days after stopping he had the same dripping episode. No inappropriate urination though.

He is having an ultrasound of his urinogenital tract and abdomen this afternoon .

Any other ideas for us to think about? I'm hoping the US gives us some answers.

There is also spinal cord disease as a possibility. But if the antibiotics are working for a while it merits focusing on infections and 'lesions' that let infections in. Interstitial cell maybe. Not an older dog with cognitive dysfunction developing? Go with your vet's recommendations.

Did the culture show anything? One of mine needed several weeks of two antibiotics at once to cure a UTI.

Have his penis and sheath been examined for any abnormalities (bumps, discharge, foreign body in the sheath, etc.)?

Hope all will be well.

OK, I can't multi quote for some reason.

His urine was not cultured until he started showing symptoms after the first round of antibiotics. So, antibiotics completed, 5 days after they were done we did the culture.

Nothing grew.

The ultrasound proved to be unexciting for the most part.

There is a cortical cyst in his kidney and a small well defined even mass in his spleen that according to the doc, are rather unexciting.

He did recommend monitoring the mass in the spleen, just in case, but not worry over it because it is even and well defined.

His sheath and penis are clean and normal.

His blood work is all wnl.

The only change that has occurred recently was over the past 3 months we have weaned him off of Paxil. We gave him his last dose 2 weeks before all of this kicked off. During the weaning, we saw no changes in his behavior, so we think he did not experience any withdrawal symptoms. The only change we've seen is that he tends to dream more now, than he did before.

So, we are at a loss. We are going to wait and watch for 2 weeks, grab another cysto and see if anything has changed.

That is a puzzle. Hope things return to normal.

Just wanted to update: another round of blood work and urine was normal. On the advice of a specialist, since he doesn't seem to be in pain and hadn't had another accident, try cranberry supplement. So, we are. It's been 5 days and he is not acting like he needs to go as often. Could be a fluke, but we are cautiously optimistic.

We're dealing with a similar issue right now -- still in the diagnostic stage. Bronto who has always had a pee stream like a river deluge lasting a solid couple of minutes has now had smaller and shorter pees on his walks (like less than a quarter of what it used to be) for the past month. Additionally, he's had a few accidents in the house only an hour or two after our long nightly walk, but he's been house broken for years. His poops have also been smaller in the past month as well. Took him to the vet, did a UA and ruled out UTI. Blood sent off to a lab, so still tbd but I would guess his bloodwork will be normal. Did an X-ray and saw that his colon turns up at an oddly high angle indicating perhaps something putting pressure and causing that upward turn, like an enlarged prostate. Now we've been referred to get an ultrasound, which we'll get on Monday. Aside from those changes, his energy level and personality remain about the same and he hasn't indicated any pain. Hopefully we'll find something out on Monday and I'll update here, but right now it's a waiting game.

An update: Bloodwork and urine culture normal; ultrasound showed healthy organs aside from a slightly enlarged kidney, but the other one was fine, so radiology-vet said nothing to worry about; prostate was slightly larger for a neutered male, but not outside of the size for normal for a dog who was neutered later in life (Bronto was neutered at 4.5 y/o). So all in all, he's 100% healthy.

With all that in mind, primary vet suggested two possible courses of action: 1) try Rimadyl, an anti-inflammatory, because perhaps Bronto is showing some early orthopedic disease of his lower back, which could be impacting his ability to posture normally when peeing or pooping, and which could be causing some pain/discomfort if his bladder or intestines are too full. 2) trying a drug that might reduce the size of his prostate. To me it made more sense that he might have orthopedic disease rather than a prostate issue because he had been getting up and down slower in the past year or so, which is why we started adding glucosamine to his diet, but it hadn't seemed to be helping much.

As of last Friday, Bronto has been on a daily dose of Rimadyl with food, and we're slowly transitioning him to a senior dog food (was on Iams green bag, now trying Nutro for large breed seniors) to see if those two things combined might help. He still does not indicate pain and has not shown any change in personality, but he does seem to be much springier when he gets up from a lying down position. I think we'll stick it out for another week or so to see if there's that much of a change and then try to step down on the dosage. He hasn't had any more accidents in the house, although we've been monitoring much more closely. And he seems to be pooping with a bit more ease, although it might be me being way too hopeful and seeing things that aren't there haha. Long story short, no drastic changes, but seemingly slight improvements in multiple areas.

Also thinking of maybe adding turmeric to his diet in a few months after he's adjusted to his new food, which others have mentioned is a natural anti-inflammatory.
