Guest HeatherLee
So I just moved my two hounds to Louisiana from Arizona. In AZ I just used Fiproguard on them since we lived in an apt in the middle of the city and bugs aren't a big a deal in AZand it worked just fine. But..now we're in rural Louisiana. I'm originally from Louisiana so I understand the difference in bugs is monumental. What grey safe stuff has worked for any of you? What about sprays for mosquitos on walks? I've used the eqyss marigold spray in Phoenix for mosquitos and it worked well. Has anyone had success with it in the south?
GeorgeofNE
I actually don't worry about mosquitos. But I believe K-9 Advantix prevents mosquito bites, repels and kills fleas and ticks. It is safe to use on Greyhounds. Quote Susan, Hamish, Mister Bigglesworth and Nikita Stanislav. Missing Ming, George, and Buck
Time4ANap
I haven't used it but when this has come up before, the products made by Adams always get good reviews. In addition they make some yard sprays that you can use in a sprayer or connect to a hose sprayer to pre-treat the shrubs and yard for fleas and ticks if needed. Edited to add - I had forgotten that we did use a Preventic collar for Rocket last year when he stayed up north where there were known to be a lot of ticks. It worked well and we found no ticks on him at all while using it. Edited March 8, 2016 by Time4ANap Quote Camp Broodie. The current home of Mark Kay Mark Jack and LaVida I've Got Life. racindog
Adams here too and Preventic collars. I refuse to use the other stuff due to toxicity concerns and the Adams & Preventic has always worked well. Note I do NOT use ANY spot ons-Adams or otherwise. Guest mgodwin
I've been using Bravecto with Ginny for about 8-9 months now and I really love the stuff. I was using frontline before since that's what my parents had used for our dogs when I was younger and she still had problems with fleas. Of course, the could've been the frontline-resistant variety. But since switching to Bravecto, she's been flea and tick free. When I was considering switching I was nervous about using it on her since it was relatively new and sighthounds can sometimes have different reactions to certain meds. Being the person that I am, I contacted Merck and used my current position in the research/scientific community to have them send me all of their studies on the efficacy and safety of the drug, some of which were sighthound specific. I was pleased with what I read and so I switched her over. If I can find them I'll be happy to send them to you. Unfortunately, Bravecto isn't effective against mosquitos so you'd have to look elsewhere for that coverage. But, Bravecto is really nice in that it only has to be given every 12 weeks instead of every month. I should also mention that I'm in Alabama where, much like Louisiana, flea and tick protection is a year round necessity.
robinw
My vet just gave me Bravecto for my dogs. We don't have a huge tick and flea problem where I live, but I visit my mom in Maryland several times a year. mgodwin, thank you for your post. ramonaghan
Using Bravecto successfully here in TN too. It's a huge pill and I have to get creative with disguising it, so I love that it's only once every three months. The mosquitos are too busy feasting on me to bother Sweep! Is Sweep not a fan of the flavor? Ginny gobbles it right up. I usually break it up and give it to her in a few pieces since they recommend it if the dog is likely to swallow it whole, and she might. ETA: I also do the same thing with her Heartguard. I just make sure to wash my hands really well afterwards in both instances. I break it up and usually have to hide it in something very stinky--like cat food. Peanut butter and cream cheese are not enough. robinw
Iker wouldn't eat his so I "force fed" it because I didn't have anything to wrap it it. Besides, he's smart enough to eat around the pill, then spit it out. Xavi scarfed it right up. Quote Xavi the galgo and Peter the cat. Guest HeatherLee
Thanks for all the recommendations everyone I went with Sentry Fiproguard Max (it was one sale, I'm on a budget) however I'm not sure if the ingredients are grey safe. I haven't applied it yet don't worry. It's ipronil 9.80% Cyphenothrin 5.20% OTHER INGREDIENTS**: 85.00% TOTAL 100.00% **diethylene glycol monoethyl ether, Vitamin E nicotinate I know Fipronil is safe, what about Cyphenothrin? Thoughts?
