King Cob And Rolla

Recommended Posts

All racing greyhounds, don't know about AKC, can be traced back to two sires King Cob and Rolla. If you go to your pups GD page and look down in the lower left you will see Direct Sire Line.

Here is Kiowa Sweet Trey's GD page.

http://www.greyhound-data.com/d?d=kiowa+sweet+trey&sex=&color=&birthyear=&birthland=

You will see the name Pilot and Pilot was the great-grand sire of King Cob and King Cob was the first commercially bred sire and it is his line that carried on. Probably 80 to 90 percent of the greyhounds will show Pilot, so your dog is King Cob.

The other name you will see is Wilby and Wilby is the sire of Rolla whose progeny continued on and are in today's greyhounds, but to a much lesser degree.

Chief Havoc is an example of a dog going back to Rolla as you can see Wilby.

Here is Chief Havoc's GD page.

I doubt there will be anything other than Pilot or Wilby showing up, but if anyone comes across another name please post it here. I am sure, by now, someone would have found a third dog if it existed.

Seven dogs with Pilot for us. Interesting. Does the same hold true for the dam line?

The dams would be a much larger number. If you look at King Cob he shows 118 offspring by I don't know how many different dams. So while it would be traceable the number would be much larger than two and from there I don't know which lines carried on and which died out.

From what I have been able to read from both Dennis and Martin it looks like there are 46 female lines that today's greyhounds can be traced back to.

Pilot for all three of mine, though all three seem to be from three different dam lines.

If you have Chief Havoc in your pups pedigree you have a chance to go back to Wilby. There are certainly others that go back to Wilby.

http://www.greyhound-data.com/d?i=42533

However, Chief havoc must be on top line, the sire line. If he is anywhere else in the pedigree you pup will probably go back to King Cob/Pilot. If Chief Havoc if anywhere else in the pedigree but the top line and your pup goes back to Wilby it is because of the sires on the top and not Chief Havoc.

If you click on any of CH 246 offspring you will see they all go back to Wilby because CH is in the top line. If you click on his 2nd offspring you will see they, more than likely, go back to King Cob because CH is the damsire and not in the top line.

So if you click the first name of CH's 246 offspring you will get Another Havoc http://www.greyhound-data.com/d?i=6645and the sire line will follow Trio, Silver Chief etc. all the way back to Wilby.

But if you click his first 2nd offspring, so he is the damsire, you will get Adas Daughter http://www.greyhound-data.com/d?i=1370and she goes back to King Cob because her sire line Farrago, Haircutter, et. goes back to King Cob.

When Dennis and Martin were active on GT they could write a little story about your dogs pedigree. I can't do that as my knowledge is limited. What I know I learned from them.

Yes - certainly Doc (the only Wilby/Rolla dog so far) had Chief Havoc in his sire line.

I see that the breeder of his sire, Rio Riccardo, advertised RR's descent from Wilby ('longest continuous maleline pedigree on record') on his GD entry: http://www.greyhound-data.com/d?i=194414
