Guest FreddyGirl
Corey, age 9, was diagnosed with Evans Syndrome, an autoimmune disease affecting his red blood cells and platelets. He's taking Imuran and Cyclosporine. He is prone to dehydration and is currently experiencing diarrhea. Now on meds for that. Anyone have experience with this? XTRAWLD
No experience with that but during chemo Kasey's platelets dropped dramatically and all I kept focusing on was feeding him iron rich foods or Vitamin B12 foods, commonly lentils and spinach are good for these. Lentils might actually firm up his stool a bit because of the fibre. Re dehydration, I've always snuck in some low sodium beef broth and rice to encourage drinking. Thinking of you. Guest FreddyGirl
Corey's history. This all started in August or September 2015 when I noticed large deep red bruising on his undercarriage. He was started on prednisone and Imuran once diagnosed with ITP, can't remember what it stands for, his platelets were in the toilet. On pred, platelets increased pretty dramatically, he didn't have much appetite, drank and peed a LOT. When weaning off of pred, p,ate lets plummeted again, so,back on he went. This time, about three weeks ago, he became dehydrated, vomited his meals. The pred caused pancreatitis, causing dehydration. So, he was in the hospital overnight on IV fluids. We quickly started to reduce the pred, as it was basically killing him. Also, he had to stop, eating raw once on the pred and add in a special kibble. This is a BIG problem as my other dogs eat raw at night! He started on cyclosporine two and a half weeks ago, red blood cells normal, p,are lets al oat normal. However, during the 2…5 weeks, he's been in for sub q fluids three times, AND, then he developed colitis! Can my boy catch a break????? So, on flagyll, very bland diet, and hopefully he will stabilize.
XTRAWLD
Kasey was on a very low dose of pred for most of his life, even during his platelet drop. What is your dosage and how frequent? On a side note: I'm gobsmacked you have a Kasey (mine passed in August) AND a Ryder that passed in Feb (mine is alive and well). What an absolute coincidence (and that they are both spelled the same) Edited January 10, 2016 by XTRAWLD Quote Proudly owned by:10 year old "Ryder" CR Redman Gotcha May 201012.5 year old Angel "Kasey" Goodbye Kasey Gotcha July 2005-Aug 1, 2015
Rickiesmom
I can't tell from your post if Corey is being treated by your regular vet or an internal med specialist, but if not the latter, my suggestion would be to get a referral asap. Has who ever is treating him checked for tick borne diseases? My heart goes out to you - Jeff's case was less complex, and was still very scary and life threatening. Yes, he was tested for tick borne diseases, negative. Kasey was on a very low dose of pred for most of his life, even during his platelet drop. What is your dosage and how frequent? What an absolute coincidence (and that they are both spelled the same) In the beginning, 40 mg / day. During the second round, he tanked with the pancreatitis. Off pred now, in cyclosporine and Imuran. How do you edit a post? Forgot how to.
