Help- Sudden Allergic Reaction

Hello everyone,

My little girl had a sudden allergic reaction over the weekend. It started as swelling on both sides of her mouth (she does not have any teeth issues and is not on any meds other than Sentinel). The swelling was not painful to the touch and she was a little bit itchy. Earlier that day I gave her half a banana, a treat she had before, with no allergic reactions. My other girl (also a greyhound) had a banana as well, with no issues. We took her to the clinic where they did a physical, no fever, but she was extremely sensitive to having her temperature taken and yelped several times. Her bum did not look irritated and I attributed this to anxiety. We were told to give her 50 mg of Benadryl every 8 hrs.
After 2 dosages, her swelling did, almost completely, go down. A day and a half later, I woke up to find her with hives on her underside (red marks, almost resembling scratches) and her left eye almost completely swollen shut and itchy. The swelling was not painful to the touch and her pupil looked clear, not foggy.
I took her to ER again where they established her temperature was slightly raised, but not a fever. She was also given a shot of Benadryl and steroid. I also noticed that she was less perky since these issues started and spent a lot of time resting. They prescribed Vinectyl P.
She just got the 2 shots I referenced today, around 7 am today and I will schedule a follow up with my regular vet. So far, they are not able to tell me what caused this reaction.

Did anyone experience similar issues with their grey? What was causing it? Do you have any recommendations on prevention?

Thank you

Is she new to you? Is she new to your house or your area? I'm assuming this hasn't happened in the past, so the question's going to be "What's new?"

Do you have a fenced yard--so that she's going outside alone? If so, don't let her out alone, keep her on leash, and watch for her to be sniffing at plants or bushes where there may be insects or large concentrations of a pollen she doesn't tolerate well. (Where do you live? Someone from the same area may be aware of local allergens or critters that could be causing trouble.)

Check the map at www.pollen.com and put in your zip code to find what pollens are most prevalent in your area now. (We've got low amounts of ragweed and juniper pollen here. My boy's allergic to ragweed. So am I.)

Watch her in the house: is she sticking that long nose into an area with any cleaning products? Or someplace hard to access, where there might be spiders?

For the next couple of days, keep a diary of what she's eating and when. You and your vet will want to watch for something eaten (or sniffed or otherwise contacted) that syncs up with the swelling.

Blame Benadryl for any drowsiness after the shots...

Also: new cleaning products? Laundry detergent? Carpet cleaner? Exterminator or lawn care?

If you have neighbors, and she goes outside even on leash. ASK if they've sprayed their front yards (or back) with anything.

Have you washed their bedding in anything new? new soap or fabric softner or spot cleaner?

Have YOU changed any lotions or creams or perfumes? Remember anything we put on us, gets on them. (same with anyone who is in contact with your dogs).

Hello all - thank you for you replies. I am in Canada and there is no pollen currently. No new cleaning products, lotions, etc. No new food items introduced. I feed her Acana singles plus occasional cooked meal (chicken + innards, no flavoring added). We do not have a back yard. I am not certain on the point about neighbor lawns - usually they post a sign if there has been a product used and I have not seen any.

She is not new to me - she has been with us since April this year. Normally, she is a pretty resilient girl - no issues so far. When she first came, she had hook worms and it took as a while (about 3 months) to get rid of it, but no other concerns.

She is doing better now - the swelling is completely gone but I am still seeing some hives on her little chest. I do plan to see my vet on Friday but feel concerned that she had such a severe reaction to an unknown source...

Did you bring in any holiday greenery or plants? We had a dog who would get hives from poinsettia in the house. Glad pup is better.

No, no extra items were added to the household. This is all very unusual - it was so hard seeing her like that. She has been on Vinectyl P for the last 2 days and is better, apart from the hives. Hopefully she does not regress when she is taken off the meds.

That is definitely not a pollen allegy reaction. Sounds like and insect bite/sting or a contact allergy. Since the initial swelling was around her mouth, sounds like possible sne got her face into something. Poor girl!

Make certain you keep medication on hand in case it happens again as the reaction could get more sever.

I agree it sounds more like a sting or bite reaction or something she got into.

Sure hope you can find the trigger. Whereabouts in Canada are you?
