A little tardy about sharing this, but we adopted another greyhound to keep The Bean company. May I introduce to you Billy Bob, the sixth greyhound to grace our household:

20150710_0035-L.jpg

He's four-and-a-half years old. We'd never before adopted a dog with such a distinguished career:

  • youngest member of the 2012 All-American Team
  • winner of the 2012 $20,000 Dick Andrews Futurity in Palm Beach
  • finalist in the He's My Man Classic
  • ran the 545-yd course at PBKC in 29.15 secs (third-fastest time ever)
  • won 10 starts in a row at Naples

He started his career at PBKC, and also ran at Naples, Mardi Gras, Dubuque (now Iowa Greyhound Park), and Bluffs Run. His last race was in August, 2014. Though born a cryptorchid, he may become a daddy next year if everything works out.

He's very sweet, sensitive, eager to go on walks and car rides, easily correctable, and has the best sad-puppy eyes. Though he tends to be content with playing with toys by himself and hasn't shown much interest in playing with Bean yet (maybe it'll come with time), I think she's glad to have a companion.

Wow, what a sweet boy. I guess he just needs some time to get used to his playmate.

Sorry for butchering the english language. I try to keep the mistakes to a minimum.

What a sweetie! Okay so I had to look up cryptorchid, and now I'm wondering how he can become a daddy? Is he fixed now and there's some... ahem... stuff frozen?

Such a handsome guy, and sounds like such a sweet disposition. How did you come to choose him?

His breeder indirectly contacted us last October. Billy Bob had run his last race at Bluffs Run in August 2014 and his breeder asked us then if we'd be interested in taking him. On another occasion he'd told us that he would've given us Bean's and Billy Bob's dam if he'd known we were interested in her (she had already been spoken for). As we had adopted Bean from him the previous year he felt he could entrust us with this special boy. Circumstances were such that we couldn't take Billy in until the end of August of this year.

It's been a wonderful development and friendship in that we've adopted two dogs from the same awesome breeder. We don't take this for granted. Never would I have thought this would happen to us.

Yes, Billy Bob was neutered while I fostered him. Thankfully it wasn't as complicated as it could have been, so he healed quickly and well. Billy Bob's original owner/breeder kept him over last winter and drew semen from him to store for breeding use. There is already one broodie (and another who is waiting to come into season) who is being inseminated with Billy Bob's semen, so he will be a daddy-dog probably within the next two months.
