Mi Ami (Mimi) 6/20/03 - 7/31/15

Our sweet girl is gone. Our hearts are broken. She developed the evil Osteosarcoma in her knee a few months ago. She fought the good fight.

I first saw Mimi's picture on Greytalk, posted by Cathie, and Mimi was looking for a home. I was smitten by her soulful eyes and gorgeous face. We had our first greyhound, Mimosa Grove, (who we lost to OS last year) for about 6 months, and I had already learned the "rule" with greyhounds being like potato chips, and it seemed that Mimosa needed a buddy. So Mimosa and I went out to Cathie's farm to meet Mimi. I already knew that she was shy, very shy it seemed, but that she liked children.

Mimosa was a little snarky with Mimi, and we weren't sure things would work. I left for a few minutes to retrieve Mimosa's muzzle from the car and when I came back, shy girl Mimi ran right up to me! I was thrilled! Cathie and I arranged for a home visit, and we also had a male dog, Nicki, visit, because we were concerned that Mimosa might do better with a male.

Cathie, Mary and Ann (I think) came out the house with the 2 dogs. I am very happy to say that Mimosa was the perfect hostess. Mimi seemed terrified and hid in the corner. We went for a walk, Mimi seemed to relax, and when we returned, Mimi went up to my front door as if to say, "Let me in, I'm home." (really she was probably just trying to get away from Nicki, who was more interested in her, than he was in us).

We brought Mimi home about a week later, and she hid for awhile, and liked the retreat of our bedroom. We gave her some space and time, and she blossomed into the most loveable, sweetest, girl I have ever met. She slowly came out of her shell and demanded attention! She was smart, never had a housebreaking accident. But she didn't seem too smart at learning commands. We were able to teach her to spin in a circle on command, but she seemed to get really frustrated when we tried to teach anything else. So she was our one-trick pony.

She had a low pitched whine when she wanted something. She was afraid to go thru a door that she deemed was not opened wide enough for her (minimum 3 feet). She would stand and whine until someone came to her beckoning, and let her in or out of the bedroom, or whatever door was not right.

She never met a stranger, human or dog. She would often lean on people she had just met, and we quickly decided her middle name would be Eileen (I lean).. If you came over and sat on the couch, she would shove her head into your thigh, demanding a neck rub.

She loved sunning herself and loved getting wet in the sprinklers.

She didn't like change, and preferred to walk the same route, and became anxious if we deviated. When we lost Mimosa last year, and adopted Cher, she instantly accepted her as a member of the pack, and taught Cher that she was not to mess with anyone else's food bowl.

Then earlier this year the limp started. We were devastated because of what had happened to Mimosa. It was in the same leg as Mimosa, left rear, in her knee. She fared better, and seemed to have very minimal pain until recently. She HATED the Tramadol and could smell it a mile away. We had to get really creative on giving it to her. Yesterday was tough on her, and we realized that her pain had worsened. We could see the tumor had become very large and it was time. Despite it all, she would still run to the door on her 3 good legs, when she heard someone at the biscuit box.

This morning we said our goodbyes. I still can't believe she is gone. RIP sweet girl. Mama loves you. You were Daddy's favorite.
