Hi Everyone,

My boy Mari is one year and four months old. He's amazing. :) Anyway, we have been waiting to neuter him until he is at a least a year and half. In the past month or so he has been a complete ball of energy. He gets a lot of exercise. We live in the country so we put him in our paddock and let him run a couple times a day. We also spend a lot of time with him, so it's not like he's at a loss for attention.

I'm wondering if this energy increase is because of him going through doggy puberty. Maybe his hormones are just kind of crazy right now.

Any thoughts or feedback on your own experiences would be helpful. I'm not looking to stop this, especially if it's just hormones. I'm more so looking for insight on what might be triggering it just out of curiosity.

Thanks!

Some greyhounds, particularly young ones, have A LOT of energy. I have one and he's 6 now and not really slowing down much :lol Keep doing what you're doing, giving him lots of opportunities to run and play. Maybe get a lure pole and let him chase a stuffy around. Teach him fetch and wear him out that way. You can also do some training with him and tire his brain out.

Enjoy! :)

Lol I figured that would be the case. Thanks for the advice. I'll look into a lure pole.

No advice on how to use up his energy but why are you waiting until he's 18 months to neuter? Just wondering.

We were advised to wait until 18 months because studies suggest it's better for their bones because of the testosterone running through. It's kind of controversial, but since he hasn't been lifting his leg to pee and isn't exhibiting dominant intact male behavior we are still waiting.

Some male dogs NEVER lift their leg to pee or show any of the "dominant male" behaviors, because they just prefer to do the 'stretch' to pee and are not 'dominant'. So waiting for those behaviors may mean never neutering him! (I knew a terrier who lived to 16 who never lifted his leg, who wasn't interested in breeding behavior, and was never neutered - he had a heart condition and they thought surgery was too risky. But then again, they also thought he would only live to 6 years old, so....)
