He's had an ultrasound, xrays, urinalysis, traumatic catheterizion (x2!!!), and prostate exam. We're at a loss... I assume the kidneys were looked at on the U/S, but now that you ask, I'll email my vet to confirm that they checked the kidney and not just bladder.

Everything is completely normal, no stones, no visible tumors - the only abnormality is the swollen distal urethra. No cancer cells were found, but they can't rule it out since one of the causes of inflammation is urethral cell CA.

He'll have a repeat U/S in a month to see how things look.

Unfortunately, despite his young age, Dr. Couto thinks urethral cancer is the most likely explanation. I have more questions and I hope he's wrong.

:( I hope he's wrong too.

I was going to say it but.....I sure thought it too. What was Dr Couto's suggestion?

He's still looking at records, and suggested biopsy or scope. My vet and I had discussed scope, but since she had to use such a small catheter in the swollen area, it's not possible.

He's on Piroxicam, and hopefully that will help with the swelling... I just cannot grasp how this is possible. How can there be no evidence of cancer on cytology - 2 traumatic catheterizations - and have this be cancer? I really don't get it. There's no blood in urine, he's not even 7. I think I'm going to lose it, I just can't accept this.

Edit because we really don't even know how old he is. He's just young.

Sometimes cancer cells are missed because the run deeper than the lining. For example sometimes you miss cancer cells when getting biopies via an endoscopy when scoping IBD dogs. That's why while more invasive it's preferred to get what they call a true cut--full thickness of the gut. Hang tight and see what Dr Couto recommends.

I don't know that we will pursue further tests. We know we need to control the swelling, aside from that, I don't think we will subject him to more tests. He's a very anxious boy, and I just want him to be happy.

Thank you for your repy, I'm just in shock. I also woke up to a fat faced Macy May who was apparently stung by a bee at 5:30 am... I want a do-over for today, maybe the past 60 days.

Hang in there. Should this turn out to be cancer there is a surgery that can be done (of course contingent on type, location....)

It's called a perianal urethrostomy. There are options--Dr Couto won't steer you wrong. I know it's hard to wait but, don't get ahead if yourself.

Get Macy some Benadryl and you a cup of coffee (spike it if it will help!) <3

Thank you :)

I'm extra stressed since I'm moving in less than 2 weeks - back to the east coast. So that's weighing on my mind as well, that I won't be here, and then we'll be up and moving the hounds as soon as we have a house. It's just a bit much at the moment :( Not knowing with 100% certainty.

Where on the East coast? The good news is that we have a ton of really great specialists over here, at least in the mid-Atlantic, including Dr. Couto himself.

Hang in there, I would be overwhelmed as well.

Back to Boston/Cambridge area. It's where I'm from, but I have no idea of the vets out there any more. I guess I need to start asking!

Anyway, I'm now ready to go deep into denial. Thanks again all for your posts, and for reading my rantings, and for understanding. I guess I'll get in touch with my old group and see if they have recommendations for once we're there.

Angel is in the Boston area if I'm not mistaken. But Jen is right, there are a ton of really great vets and hospitals. Dr Couto is in mid Pa now. I'm guessing but I think maybe 6-8 hrs away, which really isn't bad. I drove 10 hrs from NJ to Ohio to see him when he was at OSU.

I hope things turn out ok. He's such a young pup. Handsome too.
