Skunk Stench Remedies...?

Hi everyone!

We had our first skunking tonight and it's NASTY!

Our girl just got sprayed on her back/butt...her face and eyes are ok. They watered at first but stopped almost right away and they're not red.

We prepared a solution of soap, hydrogen peroxide and soap and she got a quick bath but she still stinks. I have a bad feeling that we will have to live with skunk stench for a while now (in our 1 bedroom apartment - yay).

Do you have any advice on what else we can do? Should we give her few more baths over the next few days? We're going to the cottage this weekend so maybe the fresh air and rolling in the grass will help...?

Thanks!

Nature's Miracle makes a skunk odor remover.

Should be available at most pet or feed stores locally.

Yuck. Is this the homemade recipe you tried? It has been a fav here. You may need to apply it more than once, depending on how bad your pup was skunked :( Only make up as much as solution as needed at a time, don't store it as it has the potential to explode.

One quart 3% hydrogen peroxide

One-quarter cup baking soda

One teaspoon liquid dish soap (we use Dawn)

Wet down the dog with water, apply the mixture, and work it through the fur. Leave the solution on ~five minutes. Rinse well with water. Repeat as needed.

Ugh. Been there with my mutt.

I purchased something from the pet store specifically for skunk odors. It helped, but not 100%. Eventually the smell goes away.

Every time she goes out in the rain, she will smell again. It does last for a while. I have used the Nature's Miracle skunk odor remover.

Another vote for the Nature's Miracle. The recipe you made works well too, but I believe the NM has some kind of enzymes in it as well. I don't think anything will totally get rid of the smell. As someone said, your pup might smell when wet for a while. Just be thankful greys have short fur!

my late scottie, velcro, was notorious for getting sprayed. the nature's miracle seemed like a waste of money to me. those were the days prior to the H202 recipe. i found old fashioned tomato paste- a concentrate of tomato worked well.i always keep a couple of cans in the back of my pantry. i do remember my welsh terrier finding a litter of skunks and barking away so my scottie followed....what a mess! we were fishing. so dh ran to the local 7-11 and purchased what they had in tomato products and newspaper. we drenched the dogs in V8 and left it on and lined our brand new civic w/ newspapers and drove home w/ the windows wide open. the regular tomato paste rubbed in and then numerous baths helped, but those beards!!!

the groomer i used just washed and rewashed my saluki after he was sprayed during a black out in the ny area. she had hot water in her area we were still in the dark- cold water and that was it! it's a royal PITA, but it seems as if once a skunk includes your yard in their nightly walks, your doomed. they do seem to be very regular about their habits and generally ours visit about the same time nightly.
