Charlies_Dad
Well this is our first posting ever in T&B and am grateful for that but we have a problem. It's happened twice now that Stewie who we bring along for car rides as he like so many Greys, loves them. Also it may just be stopping somewhere like yesterday after a walk on the beach to pickup something. The back window was down and he had his head out when an older gentleman came up and said "beautiful doggie" and Stewie in his normal way gave him the soulful eyes to get some pats which said gentleman set about to do. All was fine and I had just got a chance to bring down my window to let him know that he is friendly when all if sudden ferocious barking ensued and of course scared the gentleman and Lynn and I. Stewie did not attempt to bite in any way but his bark is very scary and considering he was enjoying the pats for a while it seems strange he all of a sudden changes his demeanor. He has done this once before and it's very embarrassing as well as scary that he may bite someone sometime. He does not do this when we walk him on the beach and people pay attention to him (man or woman). Any thoughts on why he reacted this way and suggestions to stop it? Our initial thoughts are no windows down for him unless we are driving. Sambuca
It sounds like he's territorial of the car. If you want him to say hi to someone take him out of the car and walk away from it. Don't open the windows for pets.
Time4ANap
Sounds like he's protective of the car (or yelling Stranger Danger... ) Rocket did something similar last year when someone that he knows and likes came into our house through the front door. I had waved them in as they were walking up the sidewalk, and he went ballistic on them. We figured it was because I didn't go to the door and open it for them which is what he was used to. Guest normaandburrell
My grey is protective. He will bark a little when strangers come to the front door, but he acts ferocious if they come in the back or come in without us giving permission. He doesn't do this with people he knows well. I agree he is being protective. Keep the windows up, and be sure he knows you are giving permission for others to approach.

Don't open the windows for pets. I was thinking the same thing. If I'm not mistaken, I think you've posted before that Stewie is a barker and sort of a watch dog type. My quess would be that he's protecting his car and it's precious contents. RedHead
Some dogs also feel more vulnerable and trapped in a car, so he could just be fearful. My non-grey does the same thing. I know she wouldn't bite, but the car is the only place where she will bark and growl at people who approach and want to pet her (she has a very timid and shy personality). I think she feels a "backed into a corner" type thing. Edited November 29, 2014 by RedHead
Guest shanesmom
We had a German Shepherd who reacted just like that when in the car. Any car. If I would have put him in your car he would have never let you back in. Only a handful of family members could approach a car if he was in it. But if we wanted to give someone a ride we could take him out, put the person in first and then him and doing it like that he was ok. He was territorial in an xpen too. He guarded any small space he was put in. We were alway careful not to let anyone pet him while he was in the car or have the window unrolled when we stopped somewhere because people will stick their hands in without asking. Beachbum1
Taylor will unleash "Holy Jihad" on anyone coming near the car. There is a lot of dog-power behind his bellowing barks. But he has no problem with people at the drive-though windows(fast food, drug stores, banks).
GeorgeofNE
My family dog almost took my arm off when I approached him in the car one day when I happened upon Mother's car parked in town. Freaked me out. Very territorial of the car!! Quote Susan, Hamish, Mister Bigglesworth and Nikita Stanislav. Guest Greyt_dog_lover
Could he have seen a squirrel or other critter in the vicinity that he was actually barking at?
