macoduck
Potential adopters live on the 3rd floor of an apartment. Does anyone have a training tutorial in writing or video that I can share with them? Guest greyhound_in_LA
I can't think of a good YouTube video for that with a Greyhound. I think the best way to teach a noob Greyhound is to have it watch a savvy dog go up and down the stairs then take the Greyhound to a short flight of stairs to practice before attacking a really long flight. FiveRoooooers
I don't know why I didn't think of YouTube. Looky what I found: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iv-U2EYjnhs That's exactly how Sorella learned stairs on the exhausting day that she arrived: left front up, right front, then the hind feet, and until the day she died that is how she navigated stairs, even when she was in a hurry Quote Old Dogs are the Best Dogs. Guest tranquill
we had a similar situation with our boy Alphonse, that video is very similar to how we taught him. Make sure you always move his limbs in the same sequence so he doesn't get confused (that was a stumbling block for Al before we figured it out.) We also used treats (cheese), which sped up his learning curve considerably. it helps if you have one person to brace the dog and one ahead to drop the treats, but I did manage it on my own (and I'm not strong at all) with my 70lb boy. just throw the cheese a step ahead of him and brace his butt, and he'll go right up. make sure you use something that is high value, like cheese or meat. It makes the stairs into a fun game rather than a scary obstacle. and be sure to give lots of treats for making it. if you are using a clicker you could also use that to break down the behaviour into smaller segments, but it's not necessary. Al did just fine without it.
socalgreys
This is cool. Then, how do you get them down the stairs?
macoduck
Mazy just did stairs for the first time today. Going up she needed very little encouragement. She wasn't as thrill going down. I didn't rush her as I could see she was getting momentarily distracted by new sights and sounds at the apartment building, but soon she started stepping down the stairs. I kept the leash short so she'd be close to me.
