Corinna's Limping Badly.

Recommended Posts

Just checking into see how Corinna is doing and if you found a clinic/vet to help her.

I made an appointment for tuesday with a new clinic my dog walker recommended. Unfortunately it's a holiday weekend so I couldn't get an earlier appointment.

Corinna hasn't gotten any better and I think it may be a bit worse. I'm quite worried now as I was running my hand down her leg to feel for and lumps or bumps and part way down her forearm she yelped and snapped at me. I really wasn't using much pressure at all.

I have her tramadol every 12 hours but I haven't noticed a difference. I just feel horrible for her. Tuesday can't come soon enough.

These long weekends are horrible when we need help like this. My girl needs dental surgery quite urgently and I need to talk to someone also who is away. With reference to tramadol dosage perhaps someone else could help with this issue. Have not had much luck with that drug. Can you say who you are going to see or is it not appropriate on this forum?

By the way my boy, who I lost this year, was at the kennel with Hobbes. We met him then and I think again after you had given him a wonderful home.

Can you get her into an emergency vet? She sounds like she's in a lot of pain, and she probably needs heavier pain meds. She can get tramadol every 8 hrs also, actually I think I was giving Matty doses every 6 hours. Hopefully one of the vets or techs will chime in with a dosage, how much are you giving her?

If she tolerates tramadol well, I would give the dosage every 6-8 hours. What strength is she getting?

If it is what you fear, then it is extremely painful. I'm sending good thoughts for you both.

I agree with tbhounds.

Beyond that, if interested, Greytalk members compiled a Greyhound savvy veterinarian list, located at the top of the Health and Medical section.

I'm sorry you had such a difficult experience with your vet. Wishing the best for Corinna.

Great news, Corinna's Xrays were clear!!! Vet didn't see anything remarkable at all, no sign of cancer or arthritis. They didn't have digital xrays so I took pictures with my phone but they aren't very clear I'll post them if people want to see them.

So it looks like we are dealing with a very painful corn. She is at the point she won't put weight on the foot at all. I was given tramadol as well as meloxicam to try to hopefully reduce some or all the pain she in.

So far I haven't seen any real improvement though. Im hoping we can get a handle on this soon. She barely moves off her bed all day.

I know it sounds extreme, but have you ever considered having the corn surgically removed.

It made a world of difference for Nadir when I had a corn removed that had been causing him terrible pain for years. I know others have said they come back, but aside from one that years later came up on the toe of another foot he was never bothered by them again.

That is a great update, though I am sorry she's still in such pain. Hope you can find some relief for her soon. Scritches to your girly.

My first osteo dog was diagnosed with a soft tissue injury and the second with arthritis (neither, I should add, by the vets I see regularly). Neither had corns, so different scenario. Nevertheless, if this were my dog I would ask for a referral to an orthopedic specialist to be sure. Best case scenario, a corn is confirmed as the culprit.

Another option, that was recommended to me in different context with a different dog who did have bad corns, was to do a nerve block to "disable" the corn pain. If the dog then walks normally, the corn(s) are confirmed as the culprit. If not, there is reason to look further.

If he owns the clinic I would find another place to spend your money. I wouldn't give him or his clinic another dime.

I agree. No one should be treated like that. I would call around to find out if any other clinics in the area have greyhound experience. Hoping it is just the corns and nothing else.

Kasey just recently started limping with the same issue of painful corns. My next try is duct tape method. I have been using the Murray's Apothecary Acid & Cream combo with NO RESULTS. (Off and on for a year of use, and diligent at times as well). If anything, at least it softens a little and it has a little bit of anti-inflammatory to help with the pain. However I have heard of pups getting good results using the hyaluronic acid and cream. Hoping Corrina improves.

No idea if this would be of any help to you guys, but Karen has some info/articles about corns on the campgreyhound website. A few posts about vets in Ont. who know how to treat them.

Thanks for posting it but unfortunately I've tried most of those suggestions in the article already. Ive been using duct tape, hulling and using the therapaw up until this point.

Greytluck, there is such a thing as an injected cushioning gel? blocker that I see referred to occasionally. Wonder if Karen would know...

I will ask the vet if its something she could do or perhaps refer me somewhere that could.

I have another appointment scheduled for Weds. I will ask about the nerve block then. Even though I'm relieved its most likely a corn issue I just cant shake the nagging feeling something else is going on.

My vet and also Charleston Speciality Vet said they would not do a nerve block on my hounds. My vet hulled them a couple of days ago and for the first time in over a year they are not limping. I know it will only last a couple of days. All of the other hulls in the last year have not given them any relief.
