I've been finding them under my kitchen table, this place where he likes to hide from Mazy. Looks like he's chews them just a little - getting the cap off. Haven't seen any in his poop yet. Are acorns harmful if he swallows them? On another note, he's developed quite an appetite, including nips of Mazy's poop if I don't catch him. We've scooping poop immediately, adding pineapple juice to Mazy's food (my usual cure), pineapple, green beans, and pumpkin (gave Mazy the runs). We've increased his food a bit but he would eat til he burst if we let him. He gets Royal Canin. Mazy gets Iams. We're now mixing some of hers with his and that *seems* to have slowed, but not stopped, the poop eating. Would it be worth getting a full thyroid panel to see if that is the cause for his increased appetite? Jerilyn Posted September 17, 2014 Share Posted September 17, 2014 A quick internet search says yes, acorns are toxic to dogs. Not like it will kill him immediately, but will cause stomach upset and eating a large quantity can cause kidney disease. Seems to be more of the toxins in green acorns than brown ones. But the more immediate concern seems to be with a blockage if they are swallowed whole. I wonder if there's squirrel scent on the acorns that draws his attention. Haven't seen him try to chew any acorns. He does somehow sneak one in the house and spit it out under the kitchen table. When I was catching him eating Mazy's poop and I scolded him, he'd try to grab another bite or two. Not the same behavior though with acorns.
