Guest Yankeegreyhound
Sonny's eye had been looking cloudy for a little while. I really only noticed it at first when we were outside or when the light hit him a certain way. He is my first black dog with super dark eyes so I wasn't sure if it was normal until someone pointed it out to me at Grapehounds. I've been watching it over the past couple of weeks and decided to take him to the vet. It's a cataract. She said that a cataract in a dog so young is usually because of genetics. Turns out, I know for sure, at least one cousin of his who has one too. His cousin is only 5 as is Sonny. The vet offered to send me to a specialist but there is no treatment other than surgery and she said it was a lot of money $2-$3000 and she wouldn't do it if she were me (and she knows I will do anything for my dogs if it will help them). She said that his other eye is perfectly fine so we will just monitor his cataract eye to make sure it doesn't develop into glaucoma. She said it's possible that he will loose vision eventually but he would adapt very well and I may not even realize it. I asked if there were any supplements or anything I could try. She said she hasn't heard of anything that has been proven to help but she knows that some of her patients have tried Ocu-Glo. She said it is safe for him, there is nothing bad in it, but again, not sure if it helps or not. I figure, it's worth a shot so long as it's not bad for him. Has anyone tried it? Any success? I'm just trying to keep his eyes healthy and try to curb any progression of the cataract.
Houndtime
While I have no experience, I have met people with dogs who have cataracts and they seem to do fine. Let's think about people with cataracts. They do well until their vision becomes very limited. Hubcitypam
Poodle had bad cataracts in both eyes and did just fine.Dr. Joe explained to that quite often they keep some phrepheral vision and can see a bit if they turn their heads to the side. Sounds like the Ocu-Glo might help, can't hurt.

He is my velcro boy but I didn't think he'd copy me like this! But yes, I was fine and didn't know I had it. I only had the surgery so soon b/c I was going for lasik in the other eye so they did both.
