Guest kar Posted July 24, 2014 Share Posted July 24, 2014 Went to put snow today just in back of her jawline and she yelped. Tried to examine it but she kept yelping. Took her to my vet. She said there is definitely a slight swelling - tried to asperate some fluid with a needle but could not get any. Put on on antibiotic (gave shot - because she will not take pills now) and cortisone pills. Told me if she is not better to take her to internal specialist - not sure what it is. temp was a little over 102. She said if not infection it could be a tumor. She was really off this morning. Have appt with specialist wed - said if she worsens to bring her in sooner. Now I am really upset - is this what has been botheri ng her all along? Antibiotics should help. My Pearl was misdiagnosed with myocytis and put on prednisone which is one of the worst things for a hypertensive dog. Found out it was one of the tiny teeth way in the back that was abscessed. We took the chance and had it removed. She was high risk surgery with her hypertension and heart disease. But once out.......she was good as gold. I hope that's it and not something worse. carronstar Posted July 24, 2014 Share Posted July 24, 2014 A bad tooth could well explain why she hasn't wanted to eat. Did your vet never once check her mouth through all of this? Guest kar Posted July 24, 2014 Share Posted July 24, 2014 tried to look in her mouth today - said she felt swelling was too far back to be a tooth. but said she did not have special equipment to do dental xrays. was your dog's mouth xrayed? JohnF Posted July 24, 2014 Share Posted July 24, 2014 Poor Snow! Any inflamed tissue would hurt and abscesses hurt like hell. If youv'e ever had one you'd know. It doesn't have to be cancer. Gingivitis can turn into Periodontis and spread bacteria to other parts of the body, penetrate to the bone and even affect the heart. Antibiotics are the correct treatment at this time. I think Snow needs a thorough reassessment by a different vet. Would it be possible for you to write a concise narrative as what Snow's problems are and how they have changed over time? greysmom Posted July 24, 2014 Share Posted July 24, 2014 If the infection is still small, the odds of hitting the exact right spot to aspirate anything would be low. It could be any number of things, already listed above, or none of them and NOT be cancer. And this might indeed be the root of her other issues. If it's not an abcess it could be a blocked/plugged salivary gland. The ABs should still help, but if it starts to swell dramatically, go to the e-vet. My Cash ended up in the hospital for three days (with a surgery to insert a drain) because I didn't act quickly enough to get her in to the vet. I also would probably support a second opinion at this point. No disrespect to your regular vet, but sometimes a fresh set of eyes and hands can be very helpful. Guest kar Posted July 25, 2014 Share Posted July 25, 2014 (edited) I am taking her to a internal specialist on Wednesday. Shoreline animal hosp in Shelton - it is a vca hospital. She did eat tonight and did go on a short walk - if she is not doing a lot better or gets worse I will move up the appt. the vet said she looked in her mouth but I did not see that she could open it up far enough to see much.
