Two weeks ago today we rushed my 9 yr old girl Laci in to Tufts Emergency for what turned out to be diagnosed as a severe acute onset case of HGE (Hemorraghic Gastro Enteritis) SP? She was in full septic shock when we got her there with a temp of 106.8, fluid in the abdominal area with possible blockage on U/S. They did emergency surgery fully expecting to find either a perforated intestine, blockage or at the least a pinhole. The explored the entire abdominal cavity, palpated the full small and large intestines, and fllushed the abdomen out wit 11 litres of saline to clean her out. No blockages, perforations or pinholes were found. She has some tiny black specks dotting her colon which on biopsy turned out to be tiny focal hemorrhage points and the colon. small intestine and junction were grossly swollen but had a good blood supply with no necrotic tissue. She spent 6 days in the ICU on massive antibiotics recovering. She came home a week ago Thrus. and is doing well, eating small meals, taking her meds. She does have a nagging dry cough which they did take chest x-rays for but were clear so it may be just irritation from the anesthesia and breathing tubes. I know I've seen others post about their greys with HGE in the past so I'd be interested in hearing from some of you. I know there's no way to prevent it from recurring but need some insight. She was fine Friday night and got sick sometime between 9:30pm and 4am when I woke up. I'll never whine about my early waking habits again because the ER Docs all said if I'd woken up at 7 or 8 am like a normal person she would have been dead. It was a very, very scary week for all of us and I am beyond grateful to have my girl back home and feeling so much better because I fully expected that she'd never leave the hospital..

I just wanted to say that I'm glad that your girl is OK. Tufts is a great place and I'm sure that they took very good care of your girl. I've never had first hand experience with HGE but quite a few in the group have and hopefully they will respond.

Glad your girl is going to be fine.

My Emmy had a bout of HGE several years ago. I took her in immediately when she started throwing up and couldn't keep down water. She also started having bloody stools that were water. They started her on antibiotics and fluids immediately and kept her for three days, until she was eating again and had normal stools. They had no clue what caused it but she never had another bout of it.

Thanks for the responses. Yes, that was the take on it I was given....they don't seem to know exactly what causes it so there's no real way to prevent it which I find extremely frustrating, She got sick during the night, I woke up to a room full of vomit and blood tinged explosive "D" With 5 dogs I wasn't sure who was sick right away. When I realized it was Laci I immediately started giving her Pedialyte to try and help with the dehydration.......her temp at that point was still fine 102.4 gums pink etc. but then she started bleeding profusely from the rectum....bright red blood so we rushed her right in......this happened in a time span of about 30 min from the time I woke up. It was absolutely frightening and I honestly didn't think she was going to survive the 45 min drive out to Tufts. And the timeframe of her temp spiraling straight up and the septicemia setting in was horrifying.
