How To Stop Dogs From Peeing On New Deck?

Recommended Posts

I just had a deck built. The dogs go out a doggie door to a small porch, then another doggie door to the deck. If they make a right as soon as they hit the deck, they are at the steps down to the dog yard.

I was moving furniture on the deck the first day, and found a pee puddle. All five dogs were down in the yard at the time, so I don't know who did it. I just cleaned it up. The dogs all sniffed as I was cleaning it up, but none of them tried to pee on that spot. The next day, I was standing at the kitchen window and saw Misty ( ten year old brood) pee in a different spot. By the time I got out there, she was running around the yard. Yesterday was day three. Nobody peed. Today I went out there and found a puddle next to the swing. There was also some urine on the swing cushion, so I think this was from a leg lifter (probably Ace) not from Misty.

How do I stop them from peeing out there? Today it was pouring out, but Ace would have had a shorter walk to the dog yard than to the swing. He also likes being out in the rain. I could understand if they all covered that first spot, but this is three different locations. Will they just get used to the routine and figure it out? I go out with them in the morning and after meals. I don't think this was urgent /can't wait peeing.

If I see them pee out there, I'll take them down to the yard ( only two steps). They often go out to watch me when I feed the horses. I think that is probably when the unseen incidents happened. What should I do?

No suggestions, but a greyhound we babysit ALWAYS pees and poops on our deck. None of our pack does it, so it's not like there is a lingering odor that attracts her. She just doesn't seem to want to potty in the grass like the rest of them.

Why not seal the deck? Or put an outdoor area rug out there. House trained dogs usually.equate carpet with "I'm not supposed to pee here!"

It may just be because it's something new to pee on and they will get over it. My guy just decided that the pavement is a nice place to poo... Strange dog lol

I was thinking about carpet out there. I have several outdoor chair cushions on the deck for the dogs to snooze on. Misty peed right on the edge of one. The other dogs have figured out that those are dog beds, but she hit the cushion when she peed.

You should seal it anyway. I'd enzyme the spots and seal the deck. Then follow them right away the next few times and correct them if they try. If it's sealed it will hose off and not retain any smells. Do you think they're intimidated by the stairs and have to go RIGHT NOW?

The deck is not wood, so it is easy to hose off. The steps don't seem to bother them. I'm hoping that they were just testing the new area, and will figure it out. I do follow them to pick up poop first out in the morning, and after both meals. Those are probably the most urgent times for them.

Technically, they're outside. I'm sure they see no reason NOT to pee there. I'd suggest you escort them for a while and not let them use the dog doors. That way you can correct anyone the instant they try it.
