The Passing Of God's Gift - "theo"

April 10, 2010, I picked up my very first greyhound. He was a 3-year-old black boy, who after a few misunderstandings, became the joy of my heart. He adapted to living in an RV, and then we scored a position as park host at the local dog park. He became everyone's best friend. He played with little dogs, big dogs, people, cats, you name it. He had a heart of gold, and no prey drive at all. He wanted to cuddle with rabbits and chicks, cats walked up to him in the campgrounds, he exuded tranquility.

On Sunday, May 5, 2013, he was playing with an overly rambunctious goldendoodle, who happened to catch a nail in his flank. It tore the skin wide open. Just the skin, so there was no bleeding, but all the muscles were exposed. I got him immediately to the vet. He made it through surgery just fine, woke up, and came home. I watched him carefully, and he started swelling up, which the vet said to expect, but then he had some kind of stroke. I got him to the vet where he stopped breathing just as I arrived. They revived him and we kept him on IV and meds for 5 days. They allowed me to stay with him 24/7 and monitor his fluids and give his meds. I slept on the floor next to him, but he was not really "there" any longer. On Friday morning, he had a tiny seizure and it was time to say goodbye to my sweet heart boy who was only 6 years old. I held him in my arms, loved him to the end, and wished him safe travels over the rainbow bridge. We never knew what his kennel name was, so his name became Theo, which means "God's Gift" which he certainly was.

The next day was the big greyhound gathering that we had intended to go to before Theo was injured. I asked my friend Andi if she was up to driving up with me, as she had been going through this whole sad ordeal with me. She said yes, knowing I was set on getting another greyhound companion. Our adoption group was also aware of they whole situation and already had the perfect dog for me, another black greyhound, but a little girl this time. I came home with a 2-year-old little girl by the name of Brittany. She is a handful, but what a joy.

Would I take this dog to the dog park? Absolutely. The very first thing we did was introduce her to some of Theo's old friend's. She is definitely a different character, lots of prey drive, and all tomboy. The risks are always there, but the joy of seeing them run and play are worth it.

Theo has had a hand in the selection of this girl, she seems to have picked up a lot of his "cute" tricks and mannerisms. She will never replace him, but she has certainly helped fill the hole his passing has left.
