Guest Tman
We have had our grey for almost a year and he has done very well sleeping at night. He does not sleep with us or in a crate (he does not do well in the crate, crying, chewing on it). Last week he started barking at midnight and I made the mistake of getting up and letting him out. Every night since then he has barked. Last night we ignored him and he barked in the middle of the night for almost 2 hours keeping us and our children awake. Is there any other way besides ignoring it to get him to stop and sleep through the night again?
Guest Fiona
Dont' know if this will help but it is worth a try; our Ben used to begin to bark and whine at at about 4 am, he seemed to believe that as he was awake so should we be. I came down stairs and no making eye contact said firmly "NO Quiet". Don't look at him and move away. If he persits; sit down with your back to him and wait until he is quiet. Head back to bed. If he is like Ben (I suggest sitting on the stairs out of sight). If you go back to bed you will only have to get up again in a few moments. Repeat the process until he hopefully gets it. Never look at him, for many dogs eye contact is a reward so don't be tempted. It may be that he hears somewhere close another dog; or someone coming home from work. The sound disturbs him and he thinks it might be nice to call you and have some company. It took around 5 nights of sitting on the stairs befor he finally got it. I hope it works. Guest Beernardo
I'm in the same boat. We adopted our boy about two years ago when he was 2.5 years old. About 5 months ago he started whining and barking (one or two barks). He sleeps in our living room but he stills wakes us up. We walk him 5 days a week. There the factor that my first son was just born about 3 weeks ago, so I don't know if it is related to that. One night I slept in the living room to see what's going on, apparently he's aware of something because he stands up quickly with the pointy ears and his tail between his legs. I tried to calm him down by telling him to go back to his bed, he goes back but after 20 min he was up whining and barking. Somebody has a rooster about a block away, I can barely hear it singing at the same time as Stannis barks, simi don't know if Stannis is responding to that. GeorgeofNE
My guess is there is something in your yard he is hearing. My second guess is that if he slept in your bedroom with you, where dogs are happiest, this would be a LOT easier to deal with. No reason a dog you've had for a year should be crated to sleep, but if he's by himself, he really shouldn't be. Dogs really want to be with their people at night. Guest Beernardo
He has never slept in our room, just right outside by our room's door. But after we moved him to the living room he was fine for about a year, so I don't think that could be it. I did try to have him sleeping right by our bedroom door like he used to, he kept suddenly standing up and whining with the tail between his legs. This is being difficult for us because his bark is LOUD and I've tried a lot of things. Sometimes he still does it even if I walk him just before bedtime.
