Amantadine

Recommended Posts

My 14.5 year old girl has LS. recently hind end weakness has increased. Improved a bit after depo shot and accupuncture. Now nearly a week later is struggling again. Acupuncture scheduled for Thursday. She takes gabapentin, tramadol along with supplements. I was wondering if anyone could share any experiences with adding amandatine to the mix. I read that it helps the other meds work better.

Your girl and Mork are on the same path it would seem. We started amantadine about a month ago, and it seems like it's made a positive impact. It's hard to quantify, since he is still old and wobbly. But he seems to be much more comfortable, back to his wonky "gallops" where his back end can't quite keep up with his front, but he's seemingly more active.

My husband and I were just talking about it actually... Again he's not magically younger, but I have to think this amantadine has made him feel better. It took about 2 weeks to really see a change. No negative side effects.

I should add, he's on gabapentin, robaxin, metacam, and amantadine for his LS related issues. Oh and adequan injections.

Thanks. Will speak with vet today. She was on metacam for ages..when stoppedv(can't remember why) each time we restarted, she got bloody diarrhea. I did adequan for a long time. Switched to "generic" version when it was unavailable. One injection resulted in a bad reaction, so I stopped. I didn't think to ask vet about restarting the "real" brand.

I think she is also depressed...she lost her grey "brother" Garry a while ago, but did fine as we had a crazy Ig ..we sent him to the bridge December 26th...first time she is alone since 2004.... I know I am sad..I cannot imagine how she feels.

You might pop into the osteo thread to ask about side effects as I believe a few people in there have used it for pain relief.

We've seen zero side effects, except maybe Mork seems hungrier. Though it's hard to tell, because his circling the house looking for food may simply be because he again feels well enough to do so. Mork though, has a cast iron gi tract, and pretty much nothing bothers him at all.

A week after we started the amantadine (which is the timeframe my vet gave to see some effect), I actually emailed my vet telling her I think it was time... wouldn't you know, that old dog turned around within a couple days. I sometimes wonder if he knows I'm seriously contemplating the end.

when emily was prescribed her cocktail of pain meds, amandatine was included. the anesthesiologist who was there for her xrays was teaching the staff about new innovations in pain engagement and included it. this was 4 winters ago, so it's been around for a while. it's an antiviral drug but enhances the effects of metacam and rymadyl.
