I was at Tractor Supply today to get Pongo (Jack Russell mix) some food and they had 2 new formulas of the grain free 4Health. A Duck formula and a Pork formula. Only had small bags, looked like they were getting rid of Nutro and Science Diet as they were clearanced to make room. I got a small bag of Duck to try for Pongo. He is a bit finicky in his old age (16 yrs) and he was eating Health Extensions but I came home to find Ronon and Casper laying on the bed with his bag of dog food ripped open and the lazy thieves had their heads in the bag munching away. Had to hide this bag from my counter surfers because they all went nuts when I opened it. Might have to get a big bag when they become available.

Definitely sounds like it was a hit. I saw that at the local feed store last time I picked up food and wondered about it. It is less expensive than what I'm feeding now. Hmmmm ....

I use the whitefish grain free from 4health. My dogs love it. I will have to try the duck.

Brady is on the pork version of Taste of the Wild. How does this brand compare? Thoughts?

I feed just the regular lamb&rice from 4Health. So far, so good. The dogs look great on it and no upset tummies. It's also much lighter on the wallet.

I think it is better or at least safer. The grain free 4Health is not made by Diamond which is a big plus in my opinion where the regular grain inclusive 4Health is and the Taste of the Wild is.

Ours are also on the 4 Health salmon and potato, for the last year now. I love this food. It's quality food, and the price is great. Toby used to have some stomach issues but once we switched him over to 4 Health salmon and potato, the stomach problems completely resolved. I had never even heard of 4Health til we adopted Dakota. I then found out that is the brand of food that our adoption group provides the foster families to feed our adoptable hounds. So Dakota came home with a bag of it, and we transitioned Toby over to it as well.

Would be interested in the ingredients for the Duck & Pork formulas neither is on their website. Harry has a few things he can't tolerate so will have to try to find the details.

I'm a big fan of the 4Health brand. I'll have to see if my TS has the new formulas.

I'm going to see if my TS has it. If they do - I'm going to grab a bag. I'll post you the ingredients. What is Harry intolerant of?

A poster over on DFA kindly posted the new GF Duck & Potato :

4Health

Grain Free Duck & Potato

Ingredients:

Duck, duck meal, sweet potatoes, peas, garbanzo beans, potatoes, chicken fat, fish meal, tomato pomace, natural flavor, flaxseed, salt, choline chloride, dried chicory root, yucca schidigera extract, tomatoes, blueberries, rasberries, dried enterococcus faecium fermentation product, etc.

This won't work for Harry - his avoid list is : turkey, chicken, venison, salmon, white fish, sweet potato, oatmeal & milk. Which eliminates this one & almost every other kibble lol. He does well on Natures Logic (beef or sardine) and Earthborn Holistic GPF, and raw. I'm always looking for options to add to rotation. :)

Glad you got the ingredients. I haven't had a chance to pick up a bag yet. wow - Harry has a very hard "avoid" list. Good for you for looking for options!

Went to get food yesterday and spoke with the manager at TS. 4Health is made by Diamond, but by TS standards. 4Health has never been recalled, but TS did pull one formula voluntarily when Diamond had a recall. There was nothing wrong with the TS food, but they destroyed it as a precaution.

Ok, I'm convinced. A TS just opened in my town about 3 weeks ago. Please help me to decide which one to get. My black girl has dandruff, even with fish oil supplements. Should I get the salmon one?

How long has been on the fish oil?

Sasha has been on Grizzly salmon oil for almost a year, at about 1/2 the dosage they recommend. I find that if i give her too much, poops get very squishy. Her skin has improved, but she still has dandruff. She had a skin infection about 2 months ago, which i caught very early on, so it cleared up very nicely with meds. I don't want that to happen again, so I thought moving to grain free, at a price I can afford, would help.

Do you know who is making the grain free 4 Health ?????

Diamond makes the grain inclusive foods. The grain free foods are made by Ainsworth.

I originally had my dogs on Diamond Naturals beef & rice. I started having to return too many bags due to diarrhea problems, so they were switched to Mr. Bucks rescue blend. I would get that through my adoption group. They did pretty good on that. Unfortunately we no longer get it. So I tried the 4health beef& potato. The dogs are doing ok on it. Their coats look good, not as much shedding, they are energetic. They do poop more and my male is more solid, but my female is less solid. The budget took a hit though. We went from 40# @ $25, to 50# @ $30, to 30# @ $39.

Sure, try it. It's not a top-shelf premium food - but for the ingredients for the price work well for my dog. My Diana's been eating it for a year or so. She's happy, healthy, shiny and well.

My black grey - Sobe - would get dandruffy. Regardless of food. His was seasonal - but I found that adding fish products did a world of good (fish oil didn't do much). Adding sardines, Jack Mack or tuna helped a bunch. And - a raw egg. I alternated fish add-in one day, egg the next. Cleared him right up. Food matters - but sometimes you just have to add in some real stuff - and I think the black dogs show more dandruff - a different colored dog - and you might not notice it.

The great news - canned sardines - JackMack - eggs - are CHEAP! I'd rather buy a decent mid-priced food - and add in a few cents of canned fish or an egg every day.

I was looking at the 4Health line on the TSC website. It looks like the Beef & Potato formula is something I may be able to try out. I'm not seeing the usual red flags (for me) poultry, salmon, oatmeal & swt potato. I think I'll be taking a ride out there next weekend, maybe they'll have the Pork Formula out to look at.

Just got back from TSC -I picked up the GF Beef & Potato to try out. I noticed the 2new formulas are there in small bags only (4lbs). The Pork formula is the same ingredients as the Duck formula I posted (pg1) but the first 2 ingredients are Pork, and Beef Meal. No good for us due to the sweet potato. =(

I tried the grain free salmon for Brady. TOTAL disaster. I am going back to his old food for now to let his gut settle. Poor guy. I don't think sweet potato works for him, either. No grains, no chicken and no sweet potato. The choices are getting more and more narrow!

I feel your pain... Harry can't have turkey, chicken, salmon, white fish, venison sweet potato or oatmeal. He gets Natures Logic Beef, Earthborn Holistic Great Plains Feast. I actually broke my own rule and tried a Diamond product by buying TOTW Southwest Canyon and he's doing great on it -grrrr. Since I don't trust Diamond I'm going to give the 4Health GF Beef & Potato a try.

Haha! That is what Brady was eating and doing reasonably well on. I thought about trying the beef and potato, but I was concerned about putting the old guy on yet another food trial quite so soon. Let me know how it goes!
