IndyandHollyluv
Hi there. Sorry about your sweet old girl - my female grey is 14-1/4. I understand. I've had nothing but seniors for the past few years - all w/various back issues. Historically, most liked the snuggly nesting beds -- but a few years ago I purchased a large orthopedic foam bed w/washable cover through Drs Foster and Smith as I had a large 75 lb male w/back and hind end issues who liked to stretch out. I think it cost approx $100 - $120 (on sale). Again, large dog beds (obviously) cost more. If you don't want to spend quite so much you could try a few crate pads and layer one or two and cover with a lightweight blanky - which won't require significant effort to get up and out of. Perhaps something flat, low, yet supportive? A child-size mattress?? I know it get tough for these old doggies. Good luck! Guest lanielovesgreys
I just bought some beds from petsmart. They're large orthopedic beds and they were $30. They're only a few inches thick, so I bought two, and stack them for my LS girl.
greyhead
We've gotten good, strong ortho beds, some with bolsters too, through Costco. Much more affordable than most others, like $45 give or take. (Haven't bought one in a while.) Our guys have been big (80-ish pounds), and we found that the memory foam gets a sunken-in spot that won't recover itself. Our dogs seem to prefer the plain ortho instead. We also found that putting one bed atop another gives them a height advantage in getting up. They can put their front paws over the edge and get more leverage to raise their back ends. fliggie
I've seen the extra large memory foams at TJ Maxx and Marshall's for dogs, thinking of grabbing one myself for Sam. I think they were around $24. Quote My Photojournal
dbullwinkel
I went to a fabric store..bought a very firm piece of upholstery foam cut to the size of the bed cover. 2" thick..seemed fine as it is very firm...getting up much easier and quicker...except she is limping more now...getting worried. Acupuncture isnt until Thursday.. I just had to send my Ig to the bride on the 26th....hoping this passes.
lovemycoffee
You could buy a twin size memory foam bed topper, cut it and layer it to make it thicker.
Guest TexasGreytMom
We have three pups and buy the 4" thick queen size memory foam topper and can get 4 rectangular bed inserts from it - our pups' beds are 28" x 36". Fits perfectly in the LL Bean covers. Have tried several different brands of inserts and find the regular memory foam mattress toppers hold up much better. Guest TexasGreytMom
Wanted to add that we put the memory foam inserts in waterproof mattress covers (regular twin bed size) and then put them in the bed covers - eliminates odors which is always a plus! LOL!
AstasMinion
Like greyhead, we also had good luck with a couple of orthopedic beds from Costco for our senior girl with LS. One had a bolster on two sides, the other was just a flat rectangular bed with an added bonus of a gel running through it that helped cool her just a bit. We put the first one in the family room and the second in our bedroom (her main snoozing areas). They helped her a lot! And one funny thing was that we stacked the two beds we'd replaced in another room while figuring out whether to store or donate, and she LOVED using the stack, too. Good luck! dbullwinkel
She s limping worse..BUT getting up much better. The foam seems comfortable to her..maybe I should buy another memory foam topper and cut it to add more thickness. I am very worried about her..I added new post
