Topical "lotion" For Dry Skin?

Roobie has some seriously flaky skin on her belly and she licks it all the time. We have her on Alaskan Salmon fish oil, 1200mg 2x/day per the vet. It doesn't seem to be helping. It's very dry in our house, even my skin is really dry, and we do sleep with a humidifier on in our room with the door closed at night, so she is getting some help there...but it's not doing much. We have tried an oatmeal bath (much to her dismay) and it didn't really help either.

Is there something topical, like a lotion, that I can put on while we wait for the fish oil to really start working? (It's only been a week) I've read coconut oil is safe for dogs...is this something I could use to help her get a little relief? It doesn't seem to bother her too much, besides the intense licking she does 2-3x per day.

Coconut oil would work well if you can keep her from licking it all off before it absorbs (a little goes a long way). Sweep loves it. :chow (And taken internally it has the same benefits for skin/coat, but you would want to start slowly because it could cause loose poops, especially combined with the fish oil.)

okay...just put a little coconut oil on her belly. She tried to lick it off, so I just covered her up with a blanket and she decided it was a good time for a nap. :nod Hopefully this helps.

Thanks!

:nod if she is good about it being applied topically that's great. You can also feed her some but like someone else said, I'd start with a small amount as it can cause some loose poops (as with any oil).

I had good luck with Vitamin E caplets for Pinky (she had lupus and had really dry skin). One 400 IU caplet in the morning I think.
