Dear Gt Friends: Sick Grey Needs Answers

Recommended Posts

Guest FlosMomma

I took my almost 5-yr old Flo to the vet bc I thought she had an ear infection (or something minor) when they discovered her ears are fine but heartbeat is only 60! My other grey, Chloe, was a normal 100. Anyway, they ran tests incl an EKG finding only a slightly enlarged heart which would not justify the drastic lethargic behavior. She does not want to play, take walks, or eat hard treats/kibble; and all she seems to do is sleep. She moves slowly and carefully avoids Chloe's energetic behavior. Flo has lost 7lbs tho she eats well, less her treats now. I told the vet that Flo was sorta rolling her head and squinting her eye. Now she can't open her mouth to yawn all the way. I'm calling the vet tomorrow but they seem clueless and I've already spent $400 on tests. Does anyone have advice? My friends at GT have always been so helpful- more so than the vet!

Where are you located? Perhaps someone could recommend a bigger vet practice with specialists.

Yes, but in combination with everything else that's troubling, I'd be looking for the reason too.

Does it seem painful when you open her mouth? Could be a retrobulbar infection. This is an infection in the back of the eye. It happened to my boy and he refused to eat hard food. It can happen if they chew something and puncture the roof of their mouth as well as other things. Worth considering.

Forgot to add that it took my boy about a week to be able to yawn again after his diagnosis. It was treated with antibiotics.

Flo had a chest X-ray, EKG, and basic blood work. I take her to a vet who treats all the racing greyhounds in Cross Lanes, WV. Thanks for telling me about the retrobulbar infection. I will ask them to check on it.

We have an appointment this coming Monday at 5pm at Cross Lanes Veterinary Hospital (where she always goes). I asked them if they checked her thyroid and they said no. Someone wondered if it could be hypothyroidism, and I said I didn't know. She has lost weight, not gained it. Thanks everyone; I will keep you updated. GT pals are the best!!!

They can lose weight from a low thyroid. Make sure you do a full panel, preferably at Michigan State.

Has she had a tick panel done?
