Although I haven't been active on the forum in a long time (I do frequent the Facebook group, though), I wanted to post about my beloved 10 year old Shadow aka Devie's Endor, our first (and undoubtedly not our last) greyhound and my very first dog. We adopted him from Connecticut Greyhound Adoption 4 years ago. He had been adopted by his first family when the Plainfield track closed but they could no longer keep him. My husband and I struggled a bit with the idea of adopting a dog who was already 6 years old, knowing that our time with him might be shorter than we'd like, but I'm so glad we got over that because the four years we had him were such a blessing. He loved everyone and was such a sweet and sensitive soul. He was a perfect gentleman with his two feline siblings. When my son came into the picture two years ago I couldn't have asked for a more wonderful dog to be around him (although we were always very careful once DS became mobile). His only real "fault" was his extreme thunderphobia, but we managed.

On November 1st we brought Shadow to the vet because of excessive drooling, poor appetite and some weakness in the hind legs. He had had a herniated disc in his neck back in August so we thought maybe he re-injured it and his discomfort was causing the poor appetite, etc. He was also due for a dental so we thought he might have something going on with his teeth causing the drooling. However, the vet felt a mass in his abdomen which x-rays and an ultrasound confirmed was a huge tumor pressing against his stomach and intestines and also putting pressure on the spinal cord explaining the lameness. We opted not to perform a biopsy as it would have been very invasive due to the location, but the vet felt confident that we were dealing with lymphosarcoma. The tumor wasn't operable and we decided that we didn't want to pursue any aggressive treatment like chemo at his age. It was heartbreaking. We decided to treat him with prednisone and hoped that it would make him comfortable and give him a bit more time. It did help for a few days, but by Thursday my boy was clearly struggling and on Friday morning we knew it was time to say goodbye.

Shadow, we love and miss you so much. We will never forget you. :'( <3

While it hurts your heart, you know you did the right thing by Shadow and that is what matters.

I knew I recognized that name and after some digging I realized that I had picked up Shadow from his first home and drove him to his foster home with CGA. My email on that day to the group was "I have Shadow - what a LOVE! I was greeted with a face full of kissies and then he leaned on me for pets. Cat safe, good with kids... This guy won't hang around long."

He was a special dog, for sure. Hugs to you.
