Second Dog In 3 Months Diagnosed With Intestinal Mass

Recommended Posts

Seems like only yesterday I was posting and crying about Charlotte who was diagnosed with either IBD or lymphoma. We said goodbye to her in July. Now the fates have seen fit to visit a similar ailment on 12 1/2 year old Bess. She is losing weight rapidly and her appetite is iffy at best and nonexistent at worst. Visit to regular vet showed anemia, visit to ER vet yesterday for an ultrasound resulted in this:

ULTRASONOGRAPHIC FINDING: # of Films:

Written: 10/30/2013

Liver The liver appeared diffusely normal; the liver margins were smooth.

Gallbladder The gall bladder appeared normal-the visible biliary tree is not dilated.

Spleen The spleen appeared normal.

Right Kidney The right kidney had good corticomedullary distinction; Smooth capsule; there were no nephroliths and the renal pelvis was not dilated. The right kidney measured:7.3 cm

Left Kidney The left kidney had good corticomedullary distinction, Smooth capsule; there were no nephroliths and the renal pelvis was not dilated. The left kidney measured:6.12 cm

Urinary Bladder The urinary bladder appeared normal; no urolith or masses seen.

Right Adrenal The right adrenal was normal size and shape measuring:0.55 cm

Left Adrenal The left adrenal-caudal pole-wider then normal but normal shape ;measured 1.3 cm

Stomach The stomach appeared normal.

Small Intestines There as a focal intestinal mass lesion obliterating the normal layers; measured 1.11 cm in wall thickness; surrounding mesentery appeared hyperechoic; small traces of free fluid in the area.

Colon The colon appeared normal.

Pancreas The pancreatic region appeared normal.

Lymph Nodes There was no obvious mesenteric or sublumbar lymphadenopathy.

Any interpretations appreciated. We are not going for a surgical biopsy. Even if we wanted to we have been told the anemia would retard healing. Right now our goal is comfort and love. Thanks.

I am so sorry! Sadly, I know how you feel. I lost Fletcher four months ago to hemangiosarcoma, and Molly is having surgery on Monday for a tumor on her spleen. I hope you have a lot of quality time ahead with Bess.

Molly and you will be in my thoughts and prayers. Stay strong.

I am so very sorry that you are going through this again. It is not fair.

We lost our dearly beloved greyhound, Marty, to intestinal tumors in 2005. He had just turned 5 years old. He suddenly lost weight and as the week progressed, he became sicker despite the medications. We then did an ultrasound which showed numerous tumors in his intestinal tract. My husband and I elected exploratory surgery and told our vet that if it was cancer to not wake Marty. We wanted to be sure because he was young and so full of life before his sudden illness.

I cry as I write this. He was such a special boy.

My heart and thoughts go out to you.

Thank you so much. I take it you did not wake Marty up after the surgery?
